🇵🇭🇨🇳 The Philippines has deployed its largest coast guard ship to drive a Chinese research vessel away from waters near Taiwan, accusing it of conducting unauthorized research inside Manila’s exclusive economic zone.
The BRP Teresa Magbanua closed to within 100 yards of the Chinese ship, while a smaller Philippine boat circled it and issued radio challenges as the vessel repeatedly maneuvered away.
A China Coast Guard ship then arrived to shield the research vessel and challenged the Philippine ship, but Manila says its operation forced the research vessel from its loitering position.
After years of Chinese water cannons, ramming and aggressive maneuvers, Manila is now confronting Chinese vessels far more boldly.

Senior officials from Syria’s new government held talks with senior Hezbollah officials in Turkey last month, the first meeting of its kind, Reuters reports. Progress was made at the meeting. Syrian authorities accused Hezbollah this week of links to a terror cell that attempted to operate near the Israeli border.
The EU said Wednesday it was up to London to chart a way forward for Britain’s relations with the bloc, after Prime Minister Andy Burnham put the idea of rejoining on the table. Burnham reopened the divisive Brexit debate Wednesday by saying his centre-left Labour government could go “all the way” and propose membership of the bloc, once it has weighed the “pros and cons” of different possible relationships with Europe.
