The Russian Embassy in Ireland issued a stark nuclear warning, claiming NATO was preparing an air and naval blockade of the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and warning that any attempt to isolate the region could trigger armed confrontation including pre-emptive Russian strikes against decision-making centres in NATO countries and the potential use of Russia’s entire arsenal including nuclear weapons. The embassy described the alleged NATO plans as not fiction but a matter of grave concern, accusing what it called the irresponsible and shortsighted European political elite of playing a dangerous game. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart rejected the warning, saying the alliance was defensive, that none of its activities or exercises posed a risk to any part of Russia and condemning what she called irresponsible nuclear rhetoric from Moscow. Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea bordered by NATO members Poland and Lithuania, has become an increasingly sensitive flashpoint amid heightened military activity along NATO’s eastern flank, though no confirmed evidence of an actual NATO blockade plan has been made publicly available.
