President Donald Trump rejected a temporary seven-day ceasefire proposal issued by Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, calling the terms “unacceptable” as negotiations to end the war in Iran continue. The White House maintains that any agreement must focus on eliminating Iran’s nuclear capabilities, while Tehran demands an end to the U.S. naval blockade and the unfreezing of its assets. President Trump indicated that global oil prices will plummet as soon as the conflict concludes.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that economic pressure on Tehran is mounting, stating that Iran will likely complete its final oil deliveries to China within two weeks and be left with no remaining resources to trade. The administration’s position follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit to Washington, during which U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue confirmed that President Xi was warned against offering direct or indirect assistance, intelligence, or military equipment to Iran.
As President Trump prepares to travel to Alabama and Oklahoma to make a midterm push for Republicans, congressional Democrats are questioning the administration’s long-term strategy. California Representative Ro Khanna called on the U.S. to provide an ironclad commitment against a regime change war to help facilitate a deal, even as reports indicate further negotiations are scheduled for later this week.

There is a revealing tension at the heart of Azerbaijan’s economic story. The country is still an energy exporter, and oil and gas remain central to its external trade. However, the investment message coming from Baku is increasingly about what comes after the first phase of energy-driven development.
There is no such thing as *the* global energy transition.
Look at what countries are actually starting with.
France gets 69% of its electricity from nuclear. Norway gets 90% from hydro. The U.S. gets 40% from gas. China still gets more than half from coal. Australia’s largest source is coal at 43%.
Chile has reached the point where solar alone is its largest source.
And Kenya sits on the East African Rift and gets more electricity from geothermal than anything else.
These aren’t simply different energy policies.
They’re completely different physical starting points.
Rivers gave Norway hydro. Geology gave Kenya geothermal. France spent decades building nuclear reactors. China built an industrial machine around coal. America sits on enormous natural gas reserves.
So the idea that 190 countries will somehow travel one neat path from fossil fuels toward the same energy system was always a little strange.
The world isn’t in fact going through one energy transition.
In reality it’s trying to solve 190 different engineering problems under one deadline.
