Five men arrested near US airbase in UK on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act


Law enforcement in the UK said that it arrested five men on Sunday in the middle of the night, local time, near an air base used by the US during its war against Iran. The men are being held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act that appeared to involve three trucks.

London’s Metropolitan Police, which takes the lead on potential terrorism activities, said local police received a call at 12:45 a.m. related to the three suspicious vehicles. The vehicles appeared to be traveling toward RAF Fairford, a U.K.-owned base that is operated by the U.S. under an agreement dating back to the Cold War.

Fairford has been used by American bombers for strictly limited strikes against Iran under an agreement with former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who voiced opposition to the war.

The publicly reported procurement figures alone include.

That’s 3,023 weapons across four categories.

And the firepower varies massively.

SLAM-ER brings a 500 pound class warhead. JSOW-C uses a multi stage warhead. Harpoon is built for anti ship attacks, while the GBU-39 gives Saudi fighters a precision option in a much smaller package.

Then there’s the reported Storm Shadow/SCALP capability.

What caught my attention is the combination, multiple fighter fleets + multiple stand off weapons + different target sets.

This isn’t just about how many aircraft Saudi Arabia owns.

It’s about what those aircraft can carry and how far they can threaten targets without flying directly over them.

But after going through the numbers myself, the scale is seriously impressive.

STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump struck an optimistic tone Tuesday about reaching a deal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, insisting: “We’re going to make a deal.”

Trump made the comments during a bilateral meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings.

Sitting next to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the United Nations, Trump told reporters that both Russia and Ukraine want to see the war between them end.

“I think we’re going to make a deal. And I don’t want to say what the deal is. We talked about it a lot, including with President Putin, and I think something’s going to happen.”

Trump said he’d be willing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin again, although he didn’t commit to where or when.

He said the U.S. is discussing with Ukraine the production of Patriot missile interceptors there.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that he hopes that the US can get Russia to come to the negotiating table, even as attacks from both sides keep escalating.

“Any kind of negotiations from Russian side, it will give a signal that, they are ready to move, because I’m not sure that they ready to move,” said Zelenskyy following a meeting with US President Donald Trump during a news conference in New York.

Zelenskyy said that Trump’s strongest move would be orchestrating a trilateral meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin “where all the sensitive things leaders can raise and try to end the war.”

Ukraine has also continued to press the U.S. for more Patriot interceptors to defend against Russia’s ballistic missiles, but is yet to get any confirmation, President Vladimir Zelenskyy told reporters at the United Nations on Tuesday.

Zelenskyy also met with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump on Tuesday. The meeting occurred after Russian missiles and drones struck at least four Ukrainian regions overnight, strikes that officials said killed five people.
