STORYLINE:
U.S. President Donald Trump and China’s leader Xi Jinping are expected to meet this week as competition over the technology intensifies.

The two are leaders of rival nations in a race to dominate artificial intelligence.

Their meeting comes during growing concerns about AI safety after American AI leaders, led by Anthropic’s CEO, called for a global slowdown in AI development.

The hopes for finding common ground on concerns around global AI safety are clouded by competition between the two countries.

As China narrows the technology gap with the U.S., each country has expressed concern over how AI in the other’s hands could hurt them.

On Sunday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said after talks in New York with China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng ahead of the meeting between Trump and Xi that the two countries discussed the setting up of a mechanism on AI dialogue and proposed a new “notification mechanism” for AI incidents that could impact national security.

🇮🇱🇵🇸 Al-Aqsa on edge again as dozens of Israeli settlers enter under heavy police protection

Led by Yehuda Glick, the groups entered the compound Thursday and performed Jewish religious rituals, according to the Jerusalem Governorate.

Palestinian officials say these visits are part of an effort to chip away at the site’s longstanding status quo: a claim disputed within the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict over access and sovereignty at the holy site.

At Al-Aqsa, even a few minutes inside the gates can carry consequences far beyond Jerusalem.
