A powerful, rare early-season nor’easter is pummeling the U.S. East Coast, bringing damaging wind gusts, severe coastal flooding, and hundreds of flight cancellations. The storm is crawling west toward the Jersey Shore and is forecasted to deliver dangerous weather conditions into Monday.

In Atlantic City, New Jersey, residents are experiencing the highest water levels since Superstorm Sandy in 2012, with ocean water flooding into homes before high tide even arrives. The Weather Service has issued coastal flood warnings across the Jersey Shore, the Massachusetts coast, and southeast New York, prompting officials in impacted counties to declare a state of emergency.

Whipping coastal winds are toppling trees and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes across the Northeast. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the system ferocious and urged residents to prepare for widespread power outages. Local officials, including Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, are asking the public for patience and advising everyone to stay clear of dangerous waters through the weekend.
