Trump Winces, Shrieks As Stone Cold Xi Jinping Stays Put| B-1 Bombers’ Flyover At Joint Base Andrews
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington, where he was met with a rare planeside greeting from US President Donald Trump.
This greeting followed an agreement reached by their senior officials to prolong a trade truce until January.
During a Fox News Channel interview, Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary under Trump, revealed that the trade truce had been extended.
This agreement, which entails the reduction of tariffs and a commitment to avoid introducing new trade curbs, was announced as Trump greeted Xi at Joint Base Andrews, located just outside of Washington.
Trade has emerged as a significant point of contention between the two superpowers, alongside issues such as artificial intelligence, Trump’s conflict with Iran, and China’s ambitions regarding Taiwan.
However, it is anticipated that a significant portion of Xi’s three-day trip will prioritize spectacle over meaningful dialogue, beginning with Trump’s choice to welcome Xi upon his arrival, instead of allowing him to make his way to the White House.
At the foot of the staircase leading to Xi’s aircraft, a striking 100-foot-long red carpet was spread out.
Flanking the carpet, a 21-member honor guard stood in formation, while President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump positioned themselves at the side of the staircase.
There, they welcomed Xi and his spouse, Peng Liyuan, with handshakes.
The welcome ceremony also included a flyover by two B-1 bombers, platoons from each military service, and a presentation of the flags and anthems of both countries.
The lengthy red carpet evoked memories of a similarly extensive one that the United States had rolled out for Russian President Vladimir Putin during his arrival at an Air Force base in Alaska last summer, where he attended a summit focused on seeking a resolution to Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
