The General Staff of Iran’s armed forces promised harsher and unpredictable retaliation and said repeating threats is no sign of strength, while parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran will never surrender or shut the country down. IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi went straight at the president’s credibility: “Trump forgets that he has already made threats before but was unable to carry them out, and now he is once again making new threats.”

This came out as Witkoff and Kushner finished a full day of indirect talks with Iran’s delegation and scheduled another round.

Tehran has spent seven months learning that loud threats out of Washington tend to be followed by something smaller, so the tough talk is cheap for them right now.

What it’s really doing is keeping the home audience steady while the actual bargaining happens through mediators a few blocks away.
