“We can’t keep rolling over for Donald Trump”: Canada’s premiers oppose new US tariffs

After a second consecutive day of talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Wednesday, Canada’s 13 provincial and territorial premiers held a post-meeting press briefing.

The primary topic at hand for most leaders? The threat of tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has vowed to impose new 50 per cent levies on Canadian imports in just one month.

“We can’t keep rolling over for Donald Trump,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said at the meeting, adding that he expects Carney to “lead the way” and “come up with a strong plan over the next 29 days.”

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said he was “positive and bullish” Canada would work its way towards an agreement with the U.S. amid what he noted was Trump’s tenth round of tariff threats. Moe added that a renewed CUSMA free trade agreement — which the U.S. declined to extend earlier this month — would be “in everyone’s best interest in North America.”

And even though tariffs haven’t taken a huge hit on Alberta, Premier Danielle Smith expressed her desire for the province to be 100 per cent tariff-free. “Tariffs don’t help anyone she said.”

Trump’s latest tariff threat serves as a retaliation to Canada’s decision to stop buying and selling American beer, wine and spirits — a move that was in response to Trump’s initial wave of tariffs in 2025.

Afternoon headlines: Bodies of US troops returned to home soil, and the toll of the ebola outbreak

President Donald Trump now says the U.S. will destroy a bridge or power plant every time Iran targets a ship trying to make it through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials have countered, saying they will hit infrastructure and energy plants across the region.

The bodies of four U.S. troops arrived back on U.S. soil Wednesday. The dignified transfer took place at Dover Air Force Base earlier today. President Trump attended the transfer, his third since the start of the war in February.

18 U.S. service members have died in the conflict. Since early July, nearly 100 have been injured.

Democrats are warning the war is “spiraling out of control.”

More than 1,000 people have died from Ebola in the Congo.

Congo’s Ministry of Health saying there have now been 2,500 confirmed cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15th. Right now, there is no vaccine or treatment for Ebola, which is highly contagious, especially so after the patient has died. The shortage of burial supplies and lack of operational teams are making it hard to contain the outbreak.

And a trial date has now been set for ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Today he learned he’ll have to wait almost a year, as the government and defense proposed a June 2027 trial date to give them time to obtain classified documents.

Maduro appeared in federal court earlier Wednesday dressed in a tan prison outfit. He and his wife are facing gun and conspiracy charges, and charges to distribute cocaine. Both have pleaeded not guilty.
