Hurricane Hunters this evening found that Tropical Depression 2 has strengthened to become Tropical Storm Bertha. While the center of the system is expected to remain near or along the Gulf Coast, forecast confidence is still evolving, and even small changes in its track could affect local impacts. Even though TD2 has become Bertha, there are no big changes in the forecast.
Based on the current track, any impacts we’d see will mainly be confined to the coast. Most models continue to keep TD 2 to our south, but there’s still some uncertainty of just how far north it will get. That uncertainty will go down once it picks up the pace.
We have a Tropical Storm Watch along our entire coast while there’s a Storm Surge watch for coastal Mobile & Baldwin Counties. As of right now, surge from TD2 could peak at 2-4′ in coastal Mobile/Baldwin Counties. In Mobile Bay and along the coast in NWFL, surge of 1-3’ is possible. Strongest winds would likely be late Tue/early Wed. Shifts in the track would mean changes to those numbers.
Regardless of track, there will be a HIGH rip current risk with rough surf along our beaches tonight through Friday. Heaviest of the rain is expected in our coastal counties. 2-4” is most likely but locally higher amounts can’t be ruled out. One thing to note though is even with heavy rain being possible along the coast, it isn’t likely to be non-stop as it would come in waves. That means washouts are unlikely.
By the end of the workweek, we’ll be done with whatever becomes of TD and will move back to a typical summertime pattern heading into the weekend. Highs the next 7-days will be in the 90s while lows continue in the 70s.
