ASSOCIATED PRESS
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – 12 July 2026
++STARTS ON SOUNDBITE++
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Jon Gambrell, The Associated Press:
“The U.S. military has struck again in Iran. It’s the third round of airstrikes we’ve seen in recent days as an interim deal to end the Iran war looks more in danger than ever before. Iran had attacked a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, a container ship. It caught fire and the crew abandoned it. The U.S. immediately launched these airstrike afterwards targeting some 140 sites in Iran. This is the highest number of strikes that we’ve seen over these days of airstrikes. Now in response, Iran apparently retaliated with strikes targeting Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates today. Now Iran has made a lot of other claims as well. Everything seems pretty scattered. What is known is that missile alert sirens went off in those three countries. It remains unclear if any damage has been done. All this is coming as there had been hopes. That negotiations would resume over trying to reach a permanent end to the Iran War. But the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, through which about a fifth of all natural gas and crude oil once passed in peacetime, is central to the ongoing tensions. Now, Iran insists it must have sole control over the strait and be able to charge vessels going through it. That would upend decades of world belief that this is an international waterway despite it being in the territorial waters of both Iran and Oman.”

STORYLINE:
The United States attacked Iran early Sunday morning over an Iranian strike on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz that set the container ship ablaze and forced its crew to abandon it.
Iran apparently responded with attacks targeting Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
The strait has become the key sticking point in any further negotiations between Iran and the United States to find a permanent end to the war that began back on Feb. 28.
The new crossfire in the Persian Gulf comes after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested an interim deal and ceasefire in the Iran war was “over.”
The U.S. military’s Central Command said it hit some 140 targets in the strikes, far more than the last two round.

U.S. President Donald Trump has released declassified intelligence that he says reveals “shocking vulnerabilities” in the country’s election infrastructure and alleged Chinese interference efforts. During a televised address, Trump claimed the information showed foreign threats to U.S. voting systems and accused officials of previously withholding details from the public.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington rejected the allegations, telling Reuters that Beijing “has never and will never interfere in the presidential elections.” The release comes despite a 2021 U.S. intelligence assessment that found no of foreign interference in the 2020 election results as Trump says election security would remain a key focus ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

An attack on Greater Tunb Island targeted Iranian defence and missile sites, US Central Command said. The regime uses the island partially to control the key shipping waterway.
The US says it wants to reduce Iran’s military capabilities and reopen the strait. Tehran retaliated with missiles and drones targeted at US military bases in neighbouring states Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait.
Earlier, Iran asked Yemen’s Houthi movement to close a critical oil route in the Red Sea if the US struck Iranian power infrastructure, in a fresh threat to the global economy.
The plan to close the Bab el-Mandeb strait was discussed with Tehran’s leadership, according to the Reuters news agency.
With the Strait of Hormuz already closed, any Houthi attacks on vessels or ports in the Red Sea would leave the Middle East’s two main oil export routes disrupted simultaneously. On Thursday, the US military said it had boarded a vessel near the Strait “to ensure full compliance with the ongoing US naval blockade”.
