If the U.S. Uses Nuclear Weapons Against Iran, How Will Russia and China Respond?

If the U.S. Uses Nuclear Weapons Against Iran, How Will Russia and China Respond? | Scott Ritter
Former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter discusses what he believes could be the most dangerous phase of the growing U.S.-Iran confrontation following Donald Trump’s increasingly aggressive statements toward Tehran. Ritter says he originally supported Trump because he believed the former president would avoid policies that could lead the United States into another major war or increase the risk of nuclear confrontation. However, he argues that recent developments have raised serious concerns about the direction of U.S. strategy in the Middle East.

According to Ritter, the greatest danger is not simply another round of conventional military strikes against Iran, but the possibility of an uncontrolled escalation that could fundamentally change global security. He warns that if the United States were ever to use nuclear weapons in a conflict with Iran, the international strategic balance would be transformed overnight. In his view, such an action would send shockwaves throughout the world and force other nuclear powers to reconsider their own military doctrines.
Ritter believes that any conflict involving Iran cannot be separated from broader geopolitical competition involving Russia, China, and the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. He argues that continued instability around Hormuz remains one of the biggest threats to global energy security, international shipping, and world financial markets. As tensions rise between Washington and Tehran, the risk of a wider regional crisis could have consequences far beyond the Middle East.

Scott Ritter also suggests that if the long-standing nuclear taboo were broken, Russia and China would feel compelled to demonstrate that nuclear deterrence still applies, although he does not predict an immediate nuclear strike against the United States. Instead, he believes the strategic environment surrounding Ukraine and Taiwan could become significantly more dangerous if nuclear weapons were introduced into the Iran conflict. Ritter concludes that avoiding further escalation remains essential to preventing a much broader international crisis with unpredictable global consequences.
