Trump’s address will air on primetime television and stream on The National Desk’s website and YouTube channel at 9 p.m. EST.
During an Oval Office meeting with Iraq’s prime minister on Tuesday, President Trump confirmed to reporters that the speech would focus on elections and a few other things.
“I’d rather save it,” Trump teased, “It will concern that subject and we’ll have a couple of other things to say also.”
Trump described his pending announcement as “really, really big news,” saying, “Our country has to shape up.”
“It doesn’t get bigger because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country,” Trump said, offering up no other hints.
Trump’s speech also comes as the United States renews daily strikes on Iran, as negotiations between the two nations stall and the U.S. military reinstated a blockade to protect ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.
While the war remains on Americans’ minds, it appears Trump will focus his remarks on elections, with two sources telling CNN that he is expected to focus on voting machine security and alleged efforts by foreign nations to influence U.S. elections.
The Thursday evening speech was announced on Truth Social on Monday, with no topic initially specified.
Typically, a primetime presidential address is reserved for a major update, like Trump’s April address to Americans on the Iran war, where he said then that the U.S. would withdraw from Iran in “two to three weeks.”
It is standard practice for the White House to ask broadcast networks to preempt programming to run the address.
As for Thursday evening’s speech, Trump has been no stranger to alleging potential fraud in the 2020 election, which now-former President Joe Biden won.
Trump has also used the last few weeks to push his SAVE America Act, which requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and establishes new voter identification requirements. He even refused to sign a bipartisan housing bill in an effort to pressure lawmakers to pass the legislation.
Members of the Trump administration have looked into potential fraud with Trump’s former Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, was on hand in Fulton County, Georgia, in January as the FBI executed a search warrant in connection with the 2020 election. The Office of National Intelligence also checked out voting machines in Puerto Rico under Gabbard.
The president’s new pick for Director of National Intelligence, Jay Clayton, faced the Senate Select Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, where he was pressed on the 2020 election, telling senators, “I’m not an election denier.”
Lawmakers also questioned Clayton about Trump’s speech. He said he had no involvement in preparing the speech, as he is not yet the director.
Ahead of the speech, Georgia Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff accused Trump of rehashing “conspiracy theories and launching bizarre new lies.”
