At Evergreen Golf Course, staff have issued refunds and rain checks to some golfers, reduced outdoor work for employees and encouraged visitors to be aware of the air quality before spending time outside.
Golf Director Don Smith said while some golfers have chosen to wear masks, many are still opting to play despite the smoky conditions.
“And I saw a few masks, not as many as I thought there’d be; I brought mine in from home today,” Smith said. “And even driving on the course, boy, you could feel it in your eyes. You could see the ash on your car to work. You know, it’s real. And again, a lot of guys kind of laugh it off and brush it off like it’s nothing, but it’s no time to try to act tough, you know, when it comes to being safe in the weather.”
Health officials continue to urge people to monitor air quality before heading outdoors, especially those with heart or respiratory conditions.
“We are actively monitoring for trends of increased visits for respiratory and cardiovascular complaints in our Emergency Departments but have not seen an increase yet,” said Dr. Joe Santangelo, chief medical, quality and safety officer at Munson Healthcare. “However, last summer we saw more patients for these complaints, but there was a little bit of a delay, so we are on standby and ready to support any increased patient care needs.”
