President Donald Trump announced that the United States will stop Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz and charge other nations a 20% protection fee for safe passage of eligible cargo. This declaration follows a weekend of escalating conflict, which saw the United States and Iran launching new strikes at each other after the collapse of last month’s memorandum of understanding. Trump shared on Truth Social that the country will now be known as “the guardian of the Hormuz Strait” to ensure fairness through reimbursement.
The proposal has drawn swift reaction and highlighted previous administration stances on international waterways. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously blasted Iran for attempting to monetize the waterway, stating, “No country is allowed to charge tolls or fees on an international waterway.” On July 13, Iran’s foreign minister responded to Trump’s statement by mockingly agreeing that safe passage deserves compensation, claiming, “Iran has always been the guardian of the Strait and will remain so forever.”
Negotiations remain highly volatile after a recent 11-hour meeting with mediators ended in an agreement, only to fall apart when the Iranians called back seeking changes. Trump plans to address the nation regarding the situation on July 16 at 9 p.m. from the White House.
