Current U.S. policy framing treats accommodation of Russia as pragmatic and peace-oriented, arguing that Ukraine must yield in order to restore stability. The premise is that Russia, if treated reasonably, will behave as a responsible great power whose interests can be balanced.
At the same time, Russia has shown growing willingness to assist North Korea in sensitive military domains, including missile, naval, and nuclear-adjacent support. These are not symbolic gestures. They undermine nonproliferation, increase strategic risk in East Asia, and elevate the chance of escalation involving the United States and its allies.
Those two realities cannot coexist. Russia is not a stabilizing actor. It is a sanctioned state monetizing strategic risk, led by an individual charged by the ICC with war crimes. Cooperation with Pyongyang is not ideological. It is transactional. Moscow trades capability for ammunition, labor, weapons, and leverage.
If Russia is aiding North Korea’s nuclear or missile programs, even indirectly, it accelerates proliferation on the Korean Peninsula and increases the likelihood of future conflicts involving U.S. forces. Supporting Russia in Europe while Russia expands risk in Asia is not realism. It is strategic incoherence.
Ukraine is fighting to stop the normalization of territorial conquest by force. North Korea already rejects international norms and relies on nuclear coercion. Russia now links these two theaters through sanctions-resistant logistics and capability transfer.
The Ursa Major incident matters because it shows how that system works. Sensitive cargo moves under civilian cover and plausible deniability. The same architecture that feeds Russia’s war effort can enable proliferation elsewhere.
Backing Russia against Ukraine does not make America safer. It weakens deterrence in multiple regions at once and rewards a state that profits from chaos.
If the goal is stability, this is the wrong path.
