Trump changed the National Security Strategy
#Conversations with AI:  #News Review

National Security Strategy ( #NSS) was recently released by the  #Trump administration on Thursday, December 4, 2025. This  #document marks a significant shift from previous strategies, including his first term’s NSS and the most recent Biden administration strategy, by formalizing an “America First” and non-interventionist approach.Yes, a new
Key Changes and Takeaways
The 33-page document, which focuses heavily on domestic priorities and a narrowed U.S. global role, introduces several key changes:
Focus on the Western Hemisphere: The strategy heavily emphasizes U.S. dominance in the Western Hemisphere, calling for the reassertion and enforcement of a “Trump Corollary” to the 19th-century Monroe Doctrine. This includes deploying military assets to the region to combat drug cartels and migration and denying non-hemispheric competitors influence.
Deprioritization of Europe: The document is highly critical of European allies, suggesting they take primary responsibility for their own security. It calls for an expeditious end to the war in Ukraine and balancing relations with Russia to reestablish “strategic stability,” while criticizing European officials for “unrealistic expectations” regarding the conflict.
“America First” Economics: Economic strength is defined as national security. The strategy advocates for a strong industrial base, securing critical supply chains, and using tariffs and trade deals to protect U.S. jobs and innovation.
Shift from Democracy Promotion: In a break from previous administrations, the strategy largely avoids mention of promoting democracy or human rights abroad. Instead, it prioritizes business interests, profit, and working with “like-minded” or “patriotic” parties in Europe, which analysts view as a nod to far-right movements.
Downplaying Climate Change and Terrorism: The strategy minimizes the focus on global threats like climate change, which it refers to as a “threatening ideology,” and shifts the emphasis away from counter-terrorism operations, instead focusing on mass migration as the primary homeland security threat.
Language on China and Russia: While the document mentions competition with China, the language is seen as softer than the Biden administration’s strategy and Moscow has welcomed some of the adjustments, noting they align with Russia’s own vision.
The document is available for review on the official White House archives website.
