Malaysia plans to start using “Orangutan Diplomacy”. Johari Abdul Ghani, Malaysia’s Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, announced that the country will begin gifting the endangered Orangutans to its biggest palm oil customers. The minister made sure to name China, India and the European Union. He says this will showcase Malaysia’s commitment to wildlife conservation. Malaysia has been fighting against new deforestation regulations from the EU. The EU plans to stop importing products grown in newly deforested areas by this December. Malaysia feels this will harm its palm oil industry, so it has raised complaints against the EU at the World Trade Organization. “Orangutan Diplomacy” seems to be Malaysia’s Plan B to secure its Palm oil exports.
