Brooklyn is building thousands of new apartments around the Gowanus Canal, one of America’s most polluted waterways and a federal Superfund site. For more than a century, the canal functioned as an industrial sewer, collecting coal tar, sewage, heavy metals, chemical waste, and toxic sludge known as “black mayonnaise.” Now, New York is trying to reverse that damage with a multi-billion-dollar cleanup involving dredging, capping, contaminated soil management, and two massive underground sewer overflow tanks. But at the same time, the surrounding industrial district is being transformed into one of Brooklyn’s next major residential neighborhoods, with thousands of new homes, public waterfront space, and major private development. The central question is whether Gowanus is a smart model for reusing damaged urban land, or whether Brooklyn is building a denser, more expensive neighborhood around pollution that has been contained, but not truly solved.

A Hezbollah drone strike near Israel’s northern border has intensified concerns over the group’s growing UAV capabilities after reports said the attack occurred close to a location visited by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Warning sirens reportedly forced Netanyahu into a shelter during his tour of Shlomi near the Lebanese frontier. In a separate incident, a drone reportedly struck near the vehicle of Northern Command chief Rafi Milo during a field visit in southern Lebanon. Israeli media described the incidents as a significant security lapse, while concerns continue to mount over Hezbollah’s ability to threaten senior military and political leaders.

Jesse Ridgway and Ashley Ridgway are standing by their decision. After the YouTuber, known online as McJuggerNuggets, shared that he and his wife made the “difficult decision” to terminate their pregnancy due to the fetus testing positive for Trisomy 21, or the chromosomal condition that causes Down syndrome, he addressed the backlash. “I’ve never seen such hate and vitriol for two people grieving the loss of their unborn child and making an impossible decision,” Ridgway wrote in a June 4 Instagram Story. “Many of the people throwing stones don’t even have children, let alone one with a condition and most likely will never do the things they say they’re going to do.” Ridgway confirmed June 3 that he and his wife—whom he wed in October—decided to terminate their pregnancy two months after their fetus tested positive for Trisomy 21. Ridgway also expressed hope that sharing his and his wife’s story would shed light on what he believes is a common occurrence. “The reason this blew up is quite simple: IT’S BECAUSE NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT,” he added. “I can’t blame people for not talking about these vulnerable experiences publicly because you see the disgusting backlash that ensues. It’s very divisive. President Donald Trump claimed Thursday, without evidence, that the slow pace of the count from Tuesday’s California primary was a sign of Democratic “rigging the election.” Several key races in the state have not been called, and California has long had a reputation for being slow to report the results. This is, in part, because a significant number of the total votes come in as mail ballots that are dropped off Election Day, according to the California Voter Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the election process.

Earlier Friday, First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli — a Trump appointee who leads the Los Angeles-based US Attorney’s office — said his office had “multiple election fraud investigations underway” in a social media post that bashed California’s election system.
