Arizona voters delivered a striking split verdict in Tuesday’s midterms.
Democrats won the governorship and control of the state legislature, while nearly 59% of voters backed Republican-sponsored Proposition 318.
The measure expands restrictions on transgender participation in girls’ sports and requires access to school bathrooms and locker rooms to be based on sex recorded at birth.
The result highlights an important distinction in American politics: Voting for Democratic candidates does not necessarily mean supporting every Democratic policy position.
