Following their sweeping midterm victories, Democrats are preparing legislation to dismantle Trump’s tariffs on Canada, with some Republicans potentially joining them.
Senator Ron Wyden, who is set to chair the powerful Senate Finance Committee in January, told the Wall Street Journal he is already discussing repeal legislation.
“There is overwhelming support for repealing the tariffs on products from Canada.”
Democrats are also considering changes to decades-old trade laws that Trump used to justify tariffs, aiming to reclaim Congress’s authority over trade policy.
Republicans from border states like Michigan, Maine and Alaska could prove crucial, given the tariffs’ impact on local economies.
The bigger battle could extend well beyond Canada: Congress is preparing to challenge the presidential tariff powers that lawmakers themselves spent decades surrendering.
