In the contest for governor of Ohio, Doctor Amy Acton achieved a remarkable and resounding win, prevailing even though more than $100 million was spent in opposition to her campaign.

With this victory, she becomes the first Democrat in two decades to capture the office, as well as the first woman in the state’s history to be elected to its top post.

A physician specializing in public health, who previously served as the state’s health director during the COVID-19 era, Amy Acton emerged victorious over Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican candidate backed by Trump.

Ramaswamy is a billionaire in the biotech industry who had also run for president in twenty-twenty-four.

She waged an unrelenting campaign centered on affordability and on making healthcare easier to obtain, reaching out to working-class and middle-class voters by highlighting her humble beginnings as an Ohio native who was homeless for part of her childhood and who, for one winter, lived in a tent.

When Acton stepped onto the stage to deliver her victory speech, she was welcomed by cries of delight, loud shouts, and chants from the crowd.

She restated the promise she made during her campaign — that she would work to cool down the political climate in Ohio and that, as governor, she would never disregard any person, regardless of whether that person had cast a vote for her or not.

The healing begins today, she said.

In addition, she made an indirect reference to the challenging last few weeks of the campaign, a period in which Ramaswamy broadcast a controversial attack advertisement that featured her estranged mother, and she expressed her gratitude to everyone who had offered their support.

The advertisement ignited a wave of bipartisan outrage across the country, with critics arguing that Acton’s mother had forfeited custody of her children many years earlier, after her husband — the children’s stepfather — was indicted for sexually assaulting Acton when Acton was a child.
