According to reports, Israel has passed intelligence to the United States and to Gulf countries indicating that Iran is weighing the use of chemical weapons against them, and this comes as Qatari mediators keep working to prevent a fresh round of fighting in the region.

As per the New York Times, Israeli officials are making the case that the danger posed by chemical weapons is more pressing than the threat from Iran’s nuclear program, even though that nuclear threat was among the initial justifications offered for waging war against the Islamic Republic.

They informed officials of the United States that Iran is working on technology that would allow it to deliver chemical weapons by means of missiles, or to covertly smuggle such weapons into countries that are its adversaries.

Certain officials in the United States believe that this intelligence is being employed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in order to press US President Donald Trump to return to active combat operations against the Islamic Republic.

Gulf countries found the intelligence briefings — which involved Israeli assessments and not actual evidence — unserious, the report said.
