Is Russia opening a new front? Ukraine warns of northern offensive

Is Russia preparing to launch a new offensive in northern Ukraine?
Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, says Kyiv is preparing for the possibility of a Russian attack from the Bryansk region. But he argues the objective would not be another assault on Kyiv. Instead, Russia could try to seize territory in northern Ukraine and force Kyiv to divert troops away from the fiercest fighting in the east.

At the same time, Syrskyi says Belarus is unlikely to allow its territory to be used as a launchpad for another invasion, despite repeated warnings from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in recent weeks.

In this interview, we speak with Marina Miron, military analyst at King’s College London, about:

Is a new Russian offensive really likely?
Why would Moscow open another front now?
Is this about capturing territory—or stretching Ukraine’s defences?
How significant is Belarus’ role today?
What does this tell us about Russia’s broader military strategy?

More than 100,000 failed asylum seekers could still be living in Britain after not being deported, according to analysis cited by the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford. The analysis found that 108,022 people whose asylum claims were rejected between 2010 and 2024 had not been recorded as leaving the UK.
