A court in Alicante has sentenced a man and woman to 13 years, 9 months and one day in prison each after finding them guilty of murdering and dismembering their 56-year-old flatmate in a bid to take over his apartment and monthly pension.

The court found the pair killed the victim shortly before 12 June 2024, then bought a grinder, radial saw and cutting discs to dismember his body.

Investigators said they attempted to clean the crime scene with bleach before transporting the remains to two rural locations outside Alicante, where they burned the torso near Fontcalent Prison and dumped the head and limbs about 1.5 km away.

The couple also withdrew up to €820 from the victim’s bank account after his death. They denied murdering him, claiming they found him dead before deciding to dismember the body, but a jury rejected their account and convicted them of homicide and fraud. Police identified the victim through fingerprints recovered from a partially intact hand.
