The fistfights at Russian gas pumps aren’t a symptom of the fuel shortage. They are life as usual in the mir.
Russians learned long before the shortage that the state doesn’t protect your place in line. It decides who’s allowed to have one, ensures the elite are at the front, and gives preference to those who pay for a spot.
In a country where law and order has always been something the state does to you, not for you, nobody waits for a neutral referee to show up.
There never was one. People enforce their place themselves or take advantage of the chaos.
The line for fuel becomes a hierarchy, and hierarchies in Russia are settled the way they always have: whoever is weakest, poorest, and least connected gets shoved to the back.
This is not the Hunger Games breaking out. It is the Russian system’s real operating logic made visible at scale because the state’s usual cover, just enough fuel, or potatoes, to keep people from noticing, is gone.
Americans queued for gas in the 1970s, and violent confrontations were the exception rather than the norm.
Not because we were more patient, but because enough of us believed the social contract, that the line mattered, and that the cops watching it would enforce it, would hold.
Take that belief away, and this is what remains across the entire social ecosystem.
