10 July 2026: Russia suspended navigation through the Don-Azov Canal, which connects the Don River to the Sea of Azov, and halted transit through the Kerch Strait after Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov.
SBS has struck 35 to 36 ships over the course of the operation’s first five days.
These waterways are critical for moving grain, fuel, and military logistics between southern Russia, occupied Azov Sea coastal towns in Donetsk and Zaporizhia, occupied Crimea, the Black Sea and beyond.
In response, wheat futures jumped as traders priced in the risk of disrupted Russian exports.
Ukraine’s campaign is increasingly targeting the infrastructure that sustains Russia’s war effort rather than just frontline forces.
Every disruption forces Moscow to divert resources, slows logistics, and increases the economic cost of continuing the war.
