The US military has carried out strikes on 90 sites across Iran, saying that the operation aimed to degrade Tehran’s ability to target shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes were conducted after Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait, leading President Donald Trump to declare the ceasefire between the two nations “over”. Mr Trump described the strikes as “retribution” and warned that attacks could “get much worse” if hostilities continued. Iran’s foreign minister dismissed talk of further negotiations, while its parliamentary speaker warned of retaliation for any additional US attacks. The renewed conflict has heightened fears of a wider regional crisis, causing Brent crude oil prices to surge by over 5 per cent and diminishing hopes for a lasting peace agreement.
