8 July 2026: The US-Iran ceasefire, built on the 17 June memorandum of understanding, unraveled in a sequence that moved from tanker strikes to a declared end of diplomacy within 48-hours.

• Iran struck at least three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz on 6 and 7 July.

• CENTCOM answered with strikes on more than 80 targets inside Iran, hitting air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and IRGC small boats.

• Iran’s IRGC retaliated with missiles and drones launched at 85 targets across US installations in Bahrain and Kuwait.

• The United States reimposed sanctions on Iranian oil sales the same day.

• Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Ankara summit, President Trump declared the ceasefire “over,” calling Iranian leadership liars and cheats and describing the diplomatic track as a waste of time, while leaving open that negotiators could continue talking regardless.

Trump has declared the ceasefire dead in rhetoric before without actually ending it.

What distinguishes this instance is that the exchange has already produced kinetic action at a scale exceeding prior violations, 80 versus 85 targets, on both sides, not the isolated tanker seizures or single-strike incidents that characterized earlier ceasefire tests.

The MoU’s practical function was to keep disputes contained to language and diplomacy rather than ordnance.

The strait attacks also expose the leverage asymmetry that has shaped this conflict since Hormuz first closed.

Iran’s post-Khamenei command structure, now IRGC-dominant with Mojtaba Khamenei unconfirmed in public appearances since his appointment, has fewer institutional brakes on escalation than existed under the elder Khamenei.

An IRGC-led decision to strike commercial shipping this close to a funeral period suggests either a leadership vacuum being filled by the most hawkish faction, or a deliberate signal that the succession has not softened Iranian posture toward the ceasefire terms.

For the US, the timing is also structurally significant.

Trump made this declaration from a NATO summit already carrying its own signal, Zelensky’s reinstated visibility after last year’s Hague exclusion.

A simultaneous hard break with Iran, delivered publicly on foreign soil rather than via a domestic statement, reads as consistent with a broader posture shift this week: less accommodation across multiple fronts, not an isolated reaction to the tanker strikes alone.

Trump says interim agreement between US and Iran is ‘over’

U.S. President Donald Trump made the comments on the sidelines of the two-day NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey following U.S. strikes on Iran in reaction to attacks on three ships in the Strait of Hormuz. When asked by reporters about the status of the ceasefire between the two nations he said “It’s just a waste of time dealing with them.” He also said he will allow talks to continue.
