In a decision involving laws in West Virginia and Idaho, the nation’s highest court ruled states may continue enforcing laws that limit participation on girls’ school sports teams based on biological sex. The ruling reinforces similar laws already in place in Tennessee.
Tennessee became one of the first states in the country to pass such a law in 2021, when Gov. Bill Lee signed legislation backed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly.
For Dahron Johnson, National Committee Co-Chair of the Tennessee Equality Project, the decision was disappointing.
“We were, sadly, expecting pretty much the ruling that we got today,” Johnson told FOX 17 News.
Johnson, who is transgender and a former athlete, said she believes the decision reaches beyond athletics.
“It signals a willingness to contest our ability simply to take part in all types of activities of life,” Johnson said. “This is really a concerning decision far beyond sports.”
Supporters of Tennessee’s law praised the ruling.
Tennessee Republican Party Chair Scott Golden called the decision “common sense,” saying Tennessee’s Republican supermajority helped lead the nation by passing protections for women’s sports in 2021.
“On behalf of all the aspiring female athletes in Tennessee, I applaud the courage of Tennessee’s elected Republicans and the U.S. Supreme Court for their decision,” Golden said in a statement.
Payton McNabb, an ambassador for Independent Women, also welcomed the ruling, saying she believes it protects opportunities for female athletes.
“I really do believe we need to keep pushing for all 50 states because a female athlete, a girl in California, deserves the same protections as a girl in Tennessee,” McNabb said. “We’re going to keep pushing until every single girl in every single state has those in place so they can have the opportunities to pursue their dreams.”
While the Supreme Court’s decision leaves Tennessee’s law intact, advocates on both sides said they expect the broader debate to continue.
Supporters say the ruling strengthens protections for women’s sports, while opponents argue it could have broader implications for transgender rights beyond athletics.
Although Tuesday’s decision focused specifically on school sports, legal experts expect the ruling to be cited in future court cases and legislative debates involving transgender rights across the country.

The attackers defense attorney, Ron Bamieh, says that the judge had determined that:
“Two old guys had a dispute and an accident happened”Visegrád 24 (@visegrad24)The 50-year-old Jordanian immigrant Loay Alnaji has been sentenced to 1 year in a county jail for killing the 69-year-old Jewish-American Paul Kessler near Los Angeles on November 5th 2023 for opposing a pro-Hamas rally a month after the October 7th Massacre.
Loay crossed a street to walk over to Paul and then hit him the head with a megaphone. The old man fell and hit the back of his head on the pavement, dying a few hours later.
