President Trump threatened to strike Iran “very hard” and later take control of Kharg Island, Iran’s key oil hub—but reports say the U.S. military was only three hours away from another wave of strikes when Trump suddenly called it off. The dramatic reversal came after Gulf leaders reportedly urged the president to cancel the attack and accept a new draft understanding.

According to reported leaks, the draft agreement would extend the ceasefire for 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, ease parts of the pressure on Iran, and delay deeper nuclear negotiations for a second stage. Tehran is publicly denying that it approved a final text, while Trump says an announcement on the signing date could come soon.

Even as talks move forward, reports from the Gulf describe Iranian attacks against ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The central question now is whether this is a real path to an agreement—or a 60-day pause that gives the United States time to calm energy markets, keep military pressure in place, and prepare for the next phase if Iran refuses to compromise on its nuclear program.
