AI Overview
According to reports following the events of February 28, 2026, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli intelligence and military operation dubbed “Operation Epic Fury”. The assassination was the culmination of years of deep-cover infiltration, cyber surveillance, and meticulous HUMINT (Human Intelligence) gathering. [1, 2, 3]
Operation Epic Fury was a precision strike that targeted Khamenei at his compound in Tehran, accompanied by a series of near-simultaneous strikes against senior Iranian leadership, according to reports. [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Cyber and Surveillance Details
The operation relied heavily on a multi-year effort to penetrate Iranian surveillance systems:Tehran Traffic Camera Infiltration: Israeli intelligence, specifically Mossad, reportedly hacked into Tehran’s network of traffic cameras, using them to monitor the daily movements of senior Iranian officials.
“Pattern of Life” Mapping: By analyzing camera feeds and constructing detailed behavioral profiles, analysts identified the routines of Khamenei’s security personnel, including exact times, vehicle locations, and bodyguard assignments.
Mobile Network Disruption: Reports indicate that Israeli operators hacked and, during the strike, disrupted mobile phone networks and cellular antennas in the vicinity to prevent timely security alerts and secure the area.
AI and Data Processing: AI tools and algorithms were employed to process vast amounts of data collected over years, identifying the precise timing for the strike. [10, 11, 12, 13, 14]HUMINT and Deep-Cover Infiltration
The technological surveillance was supplemented by on-the-ground intelligence, according to reports:Human Sources: The CIA and Mossad had active human sources, with intelligence indicating they included deep-cover agents, some of whom were disaffected Iranian nationals, who were able to provide real-time information.
Confirmation of Location: These sources confirmed the presence of Khamenei at a specific location—a meeting of high-ranking military officials at his Tehran compound—shortly before the strike was launched. [10, 15, 16, 17]Execution of the Strike
Targeted Airstrike: Israeli Air Force jets delivered precision-guided munitions and specialized missiles against the compound.
Operation Timing: The strike was executed on a Saturday morning (Feb 28, 2026), a time when high-level security meetings were known to occur, according to reports.
Simultaneous Attacks: In addition to the strike on the main compound, multiple other targets in Tehran were hit simultaneously to ensure the success of the mission. [2, 5, 9, 10, 16]The killing caused a massive disruption in Iranian leadership, with subsequent reports noting the rise of his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor, according to the Google Knowledge Graph and other reports. AI Overview
Based on reports from early 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin intensified his personal security and ordered increased protection for high-ranking officials following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, 2026, in a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike.Security Increases: Following the assassination of Khamenei and other Iranian officials, Putin instructed the FSB and law enforcement to step up protection for defense ministry personnel and state officials, citing a surge in attacks and assassination threats.
Response to Threat: Analysts suggested that the killing of a senior ally like Khamenei—in a highly coordinated decapitation strike—hit “where it hurts” for Putin, raising fears that he could be targeted next.
Repressive Measures: Putin also ratcheted up security by strengthening the role of the Rosgvardia (National Guard) and allowing private firms to use firearms to protect critical infrastructure.
Condemnation of Strike: Putin denounced the killing of Khamenei as “murder” and a “cynical violation” of international law, while simultaneously pledging support to the new Iranian leadership, Mojtaba Khamenei. [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]The killing of Ayatollah Khamenei occurred as part of a 2026 Iran war, during which Israel and the U.S. carried out airstrikes against high-ranking Iranian officials. [1]
