Based on the New York Times report from April 2, 2026, and related coverage, here is a summary of the situation regarding Pam Bondi’s departure as Attorney General:
Overview of the Ousting
President Donald Trump has fired Attorney General Pam Bondi after roughly a year in the position. She is the second Cabinet official to be removed in his second term, following the recent departure of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Trump announced the move via Truth Social, framing it as a transition to the private sector and praising her as a “Great American Patriot.”

Key Reasons for Removal
Despite the public praise, sources indicate that Trump’s decision was fueled by deep-seated frustrations with Bondi’s performance:
The Epstein Files: Bondi faced immense bipartisan criticism and personal pressure from Trump regarding the Justice Department’s handling of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. The President was reportedly unhappy with the pace and transparency of the release, which has remained a significant political liability.
Prosecution of “Political Enemies”: Trump was reportedly frustrated by the Justice Department’s failure to successfully bring criminal charges against his perceived political adversaries, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey. In several instances, grand juries or judges blocked these efforts due to a lack of evidence.
Departmental Turmoil: Bondi’s tenure was marked by a massive upheaval within the DOJ, including the firing of career prosecutors and the resignations of hundreds of employees who viewed her actions as overly partisan.

Leadership Transition
Acting Attorney General: Todd Blanche, the Deputy Attorney General and former personal lawyer to Trump, has been named Acting Attorney General. Blanche is a trusted loyalist who has defended the department’s record while emphasizing the need for “provable evidence” in criminal cases.
Potential Successor: Reports suggest that Lee Zeldin, the current Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is a top contender to be nominated as the permanent replacement.

Legacy and Impact
Bondi’s departure continues a pattern of instability at the Justice Department under Trump, characterized by a revolving door of leaders who are pushed out when they fail to meet the President’s demands for absolute loyalty or specific legal outcomes. While Bondi maintained that her goal was to restore the department’s credibility and focus on violent crime and immigration, critics argued she had turned the agency into a tool for political retribution.
