The war that began between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the 1990s severely obstructed not only the socio-economic development of both states but also the progress of the wider region. As a result of the irredentist foreign policy pursued by the Armenian leadership of that time, nearly 30,000 people lost their lives, several times that number were left disabled, and more than one million people all their possesses they had, becoming refugees or internally displaced persons.
