Use of Outdated Bamboo Scaffolding and Flammable Renovation Materials Fueled Hong Kong Tower Fire
Here’s how it spread so fast:
The blaze began on exterior bamboo scaffolding wrapped in green plastic mesh during renovations.
Once ignited, the flammable bamboo, mesh, and plastic coverings acted like a vertical fuel ladder, flames raced up the outside and entered apartments, then jumped to neighbouring towers within minutes.
Additional hazards: foam-sealed windows and plastic sheeting used in the renovation added to the fire load, making escape and containment even harder.
