Bolivia elects new president, ending 20 years of leftist rule
In the second round of presidential elections on October 19, Bolivian senator Rodrigo Paz of the centrist Christian Democratic Party won a decisive victory, marking the end of two decades of left-wing leadership.
President-elect Paz announced plans to restore diplomatic relations with the United States and re-establish ties with Israel for the first time in two years.
He is also expected to launch economic and institutional reforms, including a plan to attract $1.5 billion in U.S. investments.
The political shift in Bolivia comes amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Colombia, where a left-wing government remains in power.
Earlier this week, Colombia recalled its ambassador from Washington after former President Donald Trump accused Colombian leader Gustavo Petro of aiding the drug trade.
The U.S. had previously revoked Petro’s visa after he urged American soldiers at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York to disobey Trump’s orders.
