Georgian Dream PM Irakli Kobakhidze has expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of engagement from the Trump administration, saying Tbilisi seeks a “reset” in relations with the United States but so far faces “silence.”
“We want to reboot relations and restore the strategic partnership with the United States, but there is silence so far. This is our main concern, and we constantly raise it with the American side,” Kobakhidze said. He added that while there had been no tense meetings under the new administration — in contrast to the previous one — Georgia still expects to be treated “not as an enemy.”
“We are ready for a reset,” he said. “The minimum we ask is for someone to show us that they don’t see us as enemies.”
The remarks come amid heightened diplomatic tensions following the recent summoning of Georgia’s ambassador in Washington, Tamar Taliashvili, to the U.S. State Department. According to U.S. officials, the meeting was held to express deep concern over comments by the head of Georgia’s State Security Service, Mamuka Mdinaradze, who alleged that funds sent by a “foreign embassy in Tbilisi” — one of the largest in the world, a clear reference to the U.S. mission — were being spent under the guise of “anti-Chinese goals,” but in practice were directed against the Georgian Dream government.
