Trump removed the “woke” ideology and directions of the US Military, and threatened to fire the generals he does not like “on the spot”, especially the fat ones.

Trump also explicitly stated his intention to fire military officials he dislikes “right on the spot”. The remarks were made during an unusual meeting of hundreds of top military leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico.Reports published on September 30, 2025, confirm that President Donald Trump, along with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, declared an end to what they call “woke” ideology in the U.S. military
Policy changes and rhetoric regarding “woke” policies
Abolishing DEI: In January 2025, Trump signed executive orders to abolish all Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs within the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.
Focus on merit: The administration has repeatedly emphasized a return to what it calls a “merit-based” system, claiming that “woke” policies had prioritized political correctness over combat readiness.
End of “politically correct” culture: During the Quantico meeting, Hegseth told the assembled generals and admirals that “the era of politically correct, overly sensitive, don’t-hurt-anyone’s-feelings leadership ends right now”.
Disbanded student clubs: In February 2025, West Point disbanded numerous student clubs focused on diversity in response to the executive orders, including the Asian-Pacific Forum Club and the National Society of Black Engineers Club.
Threat to fire generals
“Right on the spot”: When asked by reporters about firing officials, Trump stated, “If I don’t like somebody, I’m going to fire them right on the spot”.
Loyalty over protocol: The threat to remove military leaders for ideological reasons rather than performance reflects a growing focus on loyalty within the administration. Defense Secretary Hegseth also warned leaders to “resign” if they do not agree with the administration’s new direction.
Comments on overweight generals
“Fat generals and admirals”: During his address, Hegseth explicitly criticized “fat generals and admirals,” stating that it’s “completely unacceptable” to see overweight senior military leaders.
Increased fitness standards: Hegseth announced that all service members, regardless of rank, must meet strict fitness standards, including passing physical fitness tests twice a year. He also announced new “grooming standards,” including restrictions on beards.
Potential military changes and concerns
Using cities as training grounds: Trump repeated his calls to use “dangerous cities” like Chicago and Portland as military training grounds, saying, “we’re going to straighten them out one by one”.
Weakening hazing protections: Reports indicate that the administration is loosening disciplinary rules and weakening protections against hazing and bullying, which some fear could lead to more military suicides.
Renaming the Pentagon: In September 2025, Trump signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense to the “Department of War,” though it still requires congressional approval.
The remarks regarding military leadership and policy come as the administration pushes for a significant reorientation of priorities within the military, emphasizing a shift toward what it calls a “warrior ethos”.
