Iranian hackers infiltrated the Arizona secretary of state’s website last month, swapping out candidate photos for those of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in what the secretary’s office called a “very sophisticated attack.”
The June 23 breach targeted the agency’s candidate portal, where candidates upload their headshots. The hackers replaced the photos with a black and red image of the former Iranian leader.
The altered photos showed up on the website’s election results pages for the years spanning 2016 to 2024, but were taken down immediately after they were discovered, technology experts with the secretary’s office said at a July 18 briefing. The candidate portal was modified to block future attempts, which caused the portal to be shut down for a week in late June.
