The Kings County Supreme Court celebrated Law Day on May 2 in the Central Jury Room on the second floor of the Civil Term Courthouse.

The theme of the annual celebration, held at 360 Adams, was “The Constitution’s Promise: Out of Many, One” — a sentiment designed to reflect the Constitution’s connection to America’s diversity of cultures, beliefs and languages.

“[The Constitution] does not minimize identity; instead, it recognizes that we are many. We all have unique backgrounds, cultures, identities, beliefs, religions or no religions, spiritual values, appearances, and so many other characteristics that make us who we are,” wrote Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for Justice Initiatives Edwina Richardson in her Law Day report for the state court system.

The Brooklyn celebration brought together top administrative judges in the state court system and the Brooklyn judiciary. Judge Joseph Zayas, Chief Administrative Judge of the Courts, and Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for the New York City Courts Adam Silvera spoke at the event. 

Zayas said that this year it feels “daunting” to be a judge, referencing a national legal landscape where President Donald Trump has targeted judges whose decisions he disagreed with.

“I believe that the rule of law will ultimately prevail,” Zayas said. “Because I believe in the courage of the bar and that judges will be faithful to the law and not be swayed by partisan interests, public clamor or fear of criticism.”

Administrative Judges Genine D. Edwards and Matthew J. D’Emic hosted the event that provided an opportunity for the bench and bar to come together to reflect on and celebrate the Constitution.
