THE LONG DEBUNKED CONSPIRACY THEORY that CIA operatives arranged for the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy is about to get a new and supercharged boost, thanks—ironically —to the slain president’s nephew Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., whom Donald Trump proposes to make a key member of his cabinet.

No doubt it was principally RFK, Jr., an advocate of many an ill-founded conspiracy theory, who engineered Trump’s announcement that he intends to appoint Amaryllis Fox Kennedy, a former CIA field operative herself, to be the agency’s deputy director, a powerful position that does not require U.S. Senate approval—and which could give her unfettered access to the CIA’s most deeply buried secrets, including those relating to the JFK assassination. Fox Kennedy is married to RFK, Jr.’s son, also named Robert. 

Maybe neither of them know of the odious history of the phony CIA-killed-JFK conspiracy theme. Or maybe they have and just dismissed the debunking as just another conspiracy theory. In any event, I’m going to set the record straight here—for them and anyone else who missed this persistent discussion thread over the years. 

The CIA-killed-JFK theory surfaced within the first year of the president’s murder in Dallas, Texas, on Nov. 22, 1963, and has remained resilient through the decades.  One of the alleged rationales for the purported CIA plot was that agency executives were livid over Kennedy’s alleged threat to “splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces” after a faltering agency-led operation to overthrow Cuba’s Fidel Castro via an invasion at the Bay of Pigs in April 1961. 

The conspiracy theory gained traction through the years, bolstered by revelations of many other CIA dirty tricks, ranging from coup and assassination plots against foreign leaders (including Castro) to drug testing on unwitting citizens, to domestic spying ops to associations with Islamist terrorists and plenty else in between.

But outside of serious JFK assassination researchers, few Americans—maybe even RFK, Jr. himself—know that the Soviet Union also had a major role in pushing the CIA-killed-Kennedy theory. With RFK, Jr.’s potential encroachment on the CIA’s vaults via Fox Kennedy, however, everyone should know the full story in case he and his daughter-in-law start spouting a new conspiratorial “truth” about the assassination based on hitherto hidden records they’ve unearthed.
