Mayor Eric Adams, under siege for weeks amid multiple federal investigations into his administration, has been indicted on criminal charges, The New York Times reported Wednesday evening.

According to the Times, the exact charges against the mayor are unknown at this time, as the indictment remains under seal for now. In its brief report, the Times sourced multiple “people with knowledge of the matter.”

The New York Post reported that Adams is expected to surrender to federal authorities on the indictment next week. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams could unseal and announce the charges as early as Thursday. 

So far, the Mayor’s office has yet to comment on the reports.

Four known federal corruption investigations surround Mayor Adams and some of his closest aides. Two of these investigations came into public view earlier this month when the feds raided the homes and seized the phones of several top City Hall officials.

It is unclear whether the indictment is connected to those investigations, which also include a probe into the mayor’s 2021 campaign’s dealings with the Turkish government — which the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has led.

The ramped-up federal action has led to a rapid succession of resignations, including former Police Commissioner Edward Caban, City Hall Chief Counsel Lisa Zornberg, Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan, and Education Chancellor David Banks — one of the officials whose home was searched.

A former police captain, Mayor Adams was elected mayor in 2021 after serving eight years as Brooklyn borough president. No sitting New York City mayor has been indicted before.
