Ukraine war briefing: Russian shelling kills three in Kherson region as road crash in west leaves 14 dead

Two bodies recovered from rubble of southern house while collision of oil truck and minibus in western Rivne region leaves single survivor. What we know on day 865

Russian shelling killed three civilians in Ukraine’s southern region of Kherson on Saturday, officials said. Two bodies were recovered from the rubble of a house that came under fire in the morning in a village near Beryslav, north of Kherson town, prosecutors said. An artillery strike in the evening killed one person in a village south of the town, said the region’s governor, Oleksander Prokudin.

Russian night-time strikes left more than 100,000 households without power in northern Ukraine and cut off the water supply to a regional capital, Ukrainian authorities said on Saturday. The northern Sumy region, which borders Russia, was plunged into darkness after Russian strikes late on Friday damaged energy infrastructure, the Ukrainian energy ministry said. Hours later, the Ukrainian public broadcaster reported that Russian drones hit the provincial capital, also called Sumy, cutting off water by hitting power lines that feed its system of pumps. Russian state news agency RIA cited a local pro-Kremlin “underground” leader as saying Moscow’s forces hit a plant producing rocket ammunition in the city. The claim could not be independently verified.

Fire broke out at a gas pipeline in Crimea, Russian-installed officials said on Sunday, blaming an accident and stating there were no casualties. Videos online showed a large fire, said to have followed one or more explosions in the Alushta district.

Russian air defence units downed seven Ukrainian drones each in the southern Belgorod and Kursk regions on the Ukrainian border on Saturday, officials and the military said. Russia’s defence ministry said seven drones were intercepted over the Belgorod region, which is subjected to nearly daily Ukrainian attacks. Alexei Smirnov, the governor of Kursk region, farther north and west, also reported seven drones had been downed over his region. He said Ukrainian forces had shelled about 10 villages across the day.

Ukraine’s air force commander said his forces had duped Russian troops into deploying missiles against sophisticated models put in place to look like military targets. Mykola Oleshchuk said on Telegram that the models depicted fighter aircraft and a surface-to-air missile battery. They were put in place at an airfield near the central city of Kriviy Rih and a district of the Black Sea port of Odesa. A video attached to Saturday’s post, described as footage from a Russian reconnaissance drone, showed what Oleshchuk said were Russian Iskander missiles attacking the depictions. “Air force personnel conducted passive defence measures!” he wrote.

In Ukraine’s eastern frontline region of Donetsk, Russian shelling killed 11 civilians and wounded 43 on Friday and overnight to Saturday, said the regional governor, Vadym Filashkin. Five people died in the town of Selydove, south-east of Pokrovsk, the eastern city that has emerged as a frontline hotspot. The Ukrainian general staff said on Saturday morning that Ukrainian and Russian forces clashed 45 times near Pokrovsk over the previous day. Hours later, the Russian ministry of defence said its troops had captured a village about 30km (19 miles) east of the city.

An oil truck collided with a minibus in western Ukraine on Saturday, killing 14 people, including a six-year-old child, and leaving a single survivor, emergency services said. The report on Telegram was accompanied by pictures of an overturned vehicle in a cornfield in the Rivne region. It said the survivor was in serious condition and being treated for her injuries.

Japan has announced a joint project with Cambodia to share knowledge and technology on landmine removal with countries worldwide including Ukraine. Under the Japan Cambodia landmine initiative, “Japan will provide full-scale assistance to humanitarian mine action in Ukraine”, Japan’s foreign minister, Yoko Kamikawa, said in Phnom Penh. “Next week, we will provide Ukraine with a large de-mining machine, and next month, here in Cambodia, we will train Ukrainian personnel on how to operate the machine.”

The road ahead is paved with bad intentions. Readers, this article is a warning. It’s a warning not to fall the rabbit hole of bull-crap the media is trying to push you into. First things first: President Biden is staying in the race. He isn’t going anywhere. He had a great meeting with several Governors the other day. He told them in no uncertain terms he was staying in the race. They are supporting him.

Biden is doing a sit-down interview that will air on Friday evening. But the media has not stopped. They will eventually. I’d like to show you the road ahead as far as the media is concerned. Because the road that stretches ahead for THEM is quite a different road than for US.

The media wants drama. It wants chaos. They have revealed themselves this week, yes? First, the media carnivores will not stop until they have another new, shiny story to tear apart. Now, think of what the media is pushing. Most of them are calling for VP Harris to take over. You do not possibly believe that they are doing this out of kindness.

Oh no. Here is the road the media WANTS to travel. Joe leaves the race. VP Harris is the nominee. Then – then — the media purpose becomes clear. The media- the NY Times and CNN- will start to go after Harris. They will go after her with the EXACT SAME FEROCITY they are going after Biden.

The truth is all of this — the media spin is not even about Biden. Not really.

It’s all about sowing discord. Biden to the media is a chess piece—nothing more, nothing less.

With him gone, they could then turn their gleaming predatory eyes on Harris. And they WOULD. To ANYONE who doubts my theory, merely think back — think back to what they did to Hillary Clinton. And John Fetterman.

The media, the pundits, are a group of playground bullies, giggling, quibbling, smug in their intentions to knock people down, deliriously snooty to any push-back; they are the escaped prisoners, free from their chains where they had to act like they gave a damn, running down the halls looking for exit signs, shedding their uniforms of professionalism, gleefully looking to commit their next journalistic crime.

. . .

They are a bunch of simpering, cruel, callus fools. They are desperate to take us in hand and lead us into chaos. Let’s not let them win. Let’s choose the OTHER road of just saying no to the media.

Representing the cartels: Attorney reveals his experience

(NewsNation) — A prominent criminal defense attorney who has represented high-profile cartel members says these clients are often “charming” individuals who understand the consequences of their actions.

Jan Ronis, who has defended figures like drug kingpin “El Chapo’s” daughter, said Saturday on “NewsNation Prime” that cartel members are “human beings” who can be “great parents” or family members despite their alleged crimes.

“Sometimes, overlooking what they’re charged with, they’re human beings,” Ronis said. “If you cut through the surface of their criminality, they’re underneath, they are functioning human beings.”

Ronis emphasized that all defendants, regardless of the charges, are entitled to legal representation. He argued this is something “this nation should be proud of.”

The attorney said he has not feared for his safety while representing cartel members, noting that criminal defendants generally understand the potential out comes of their cases.

“It’s been my experience with all my clients, no matter what they’re charged with … that you represent them fairly and equally, and don’t make any promises of a result,” Ronis said.

He added that cartels operate with “impunity” in areas of Mexico where the federal government has little control.

Ronis has represented several high-profile cartel figures, including the daughter of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Mexican drug lord Benjamin Arellano Flores.

The Sinaloa Cartel, which El Chapo formerly led, remains a dominant force in drug trafficking to the United States, according to recent DEA reports.

John Cena to retire from WWE

(NewsNation) — Hollywood hit-maker and former WWE superstar John Cena announced his retirement from in-ring competition, stating that WrestleMania in Las Vegas will be his last.

Cena, 47, said he will retire from the in-ring competition in 2025.

One of the most popular professional wrestlers of the last two decades, Cena made a surprise appearance at WWE’s Money in the Bank event Saturday night in Toronto to announce a farewell tour of sorts.

The 16-time WWE champion has made sporadic appearances in the wrestling ring over the last few years as his stock as a Hollywood actor continues to rise.

Cena recently said in interviews his time as a wrestler would be ending soon, noting he didn’t want to compete past his prime.

The Boston-area native mentioned he will participate in the 2025 Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber ahead of WrestleMania 41. He’ll also be part of WWE’s flagship television program RAW as it makes the transition to Netflix next year.

Cena last appeared in WWE at WrestleMania 40, coming to the aid of Cody Rhodes as he battled for the championship against Roman Reigns. Cena went face-to-face with longtime rival Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson during that contest. Cena also appeared as part of RAW the night following Wrestlemania.

WrestleMania in 2025 will take place on Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20, at Allegiant Stadium.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Sudanese political factions meet in Cairo with little prospect of peace

cairo — Rival Sudanese political factions formally attended reconciliation talks in Cairo on Saturday — the first since a conflict in the country began almost 15 months ago — but admitted there was little prospect of quickly ending the war.

During the conference, the Democratic Bloc, which is aligned with the army, refused to hold joint sessions with the Taqaddum faction, which it accuses of sympathizing with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Neither the army nor the RSF attended.

The war in Sudan erupted in April 2023 and has forced almost 10 million people from their homes, sparked warnings of famine and waves of ethnically driven violence blamed largely on the RSF.

The force this week swept through the state of Sennar, causing new displacement. In response, army head General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said the army would not negotiate with the RSF or its supporters.

“The stark deterioration in the humanitarian situation and the catastrophic consequences of this crisis call on all of us to work to immediately and sustainably to stop military operations,” said newly-appointed Egyptian foreign minister Badr Abdelatty.

Talks in Jeddah between the army and RSF that were sponsored by the United States and Saudi Arabia broke down at the end of last year.

Taqaddum is a coalition of pro-democracy parties, armed groups, and civil society that has called for an end to the war. The army-aligned Democratic Bloc includes several armed group leaders participating in the fighting.

While Egypt was able to wield its influence to assemble the group, the main attendees were seated at opposite sides of the hall at the conference’s opening. The two political factions agreed only to form a small subcommittee to come up with a final communique expected late Saturday.

“We told them not to have high ambitions from this meeting,” said finance minister and Democratic Bloc leader Jibril Ibrahim to Reuters.

“Given the situation on the ground, if we sit and eat and drink and laugh — with the people who are allied and partners in the crimes that are happening — we would be sending the wrong message to our citizens and to our soldiers on the field,” he said.

He added that an end to the war was not realistic without the withdrawal of the RSF from civilian areas, in line with an agreement signed in Jeddah last year, and the end of material support to the RSF by the United Arab Emirates. U.N. experts have said that accusations of such support are credible though the UAE has denied them.

Former Prime Minister and Taqaddum head Abdalla Hamdok rejected accusations that the coalition was linked to the RSF, saying he awaited the army’s agreement to meet.

“A crisis this complicated and deep is not expected to end in one meeting… The lesson is for us to be patient and to build on anything positive that comes out of it,” he told Reuters, echoing sentiments from diplomats at the meeting.

U.S. Special Envoy Tom Perriello said he hoped momentum from Saturday’s talks would carry on to another meeting called by the African Union next week, another of several initiatives.
