Why my Sonoma County synagogue stands for a ceasefire in Gaza

In mid-June, the members of Congregation Ner Shalom of Cotati in Sonoma County issued a statement in support of a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

I want to share a little about the statement and its process because a synagogue issuing a ceasefire statement is still a curiosity to many. It feels less radical now than it would have five months ago, but it required a great deal of thought — and some courage.

In our statement, we speak about the death toll in Gaza, as well as our desire for Jewish safety. We identify specific Jewish values that impel us to speak out. We call for a permanent bilateral ceasefire, the return of hostages and increased humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. We write from the heart, without jargon or political shorthand.

‘Caught in the middle’

Before issuing the statement we were — like many Jews and Jewish institutions — tongue-tied. Our hearts were heavy from the violence of Oct. 7, the ongoing plight of the hostages and the astonishing number of deaths in Gaza. So many of those deaths have been civilians, and so many of those civilians have been children. With shock, we watched the unfolding starvation in Gaza.

In response to all of this, one might have expected advocates on all sides to band together like never before to call loudly and forcefully for a halt in the fighting, so that Israelis, Palestinians and people everywhere who care about them could catch our collective breath, grieve and figure out what to do next.

Instead, advocacy groups staked out their turf and asked us all to join them on it. On one side, if we didn’t stand with Israel unconditionally, then we were giving aid and comfort to Hamas and aiding and abetting antisemites. On the other side, if we didn’t disavow Zionism immediately and fully, we were complicit in genocide. These messages weren’t always explicit, but this is how it felt to me and to many members of my congregation: We were caught in the middle.

It was certainly more than enough to keep one silent.

‘Who we are as Jews is at stake’

But we realized we didn’t need to sign onto anyone else’s demands to express our grief, our concern and our tattered hope. We decided we could speak together as caring humans, as people of conscience, as Jews and as people who against all odds maintain a commitment to a peaceful and secure future for Jews and Palestinians in the land. We knew we could assert simply that, no matter what the ideology, the violence must stop.

We worked hard on language. We listened to our hearts, to our sadness. We responded to the suffering we are seeing. We offered no specific policy proposal for the future but as we said in the statement, “We are clear that all futures worth having pass through the portal of immediate and permanent ceasefire.”

Some may read our statement and feel that we were too harsh on Israel. Indeed, we were mostly speaking to Israel. This is because we are Jews and, thus, Israel is our sphere of concern, connection and responsibility. Violence enacted upon Israel affects us, and so does violence enacted by Israel. Who we are as Jews is at stake.

As we say in the statement, “The death toll in Gaza has not brought back the hostages, but it has caused unspeakable suffering, undermined Israel’s moral standing, and wounded the collective Jewish soul.”

We knew that no words would be perfect or complete. But we knew our words had to be honest, and I think we achieved that. The statement was approved unanimously by the board, with the near-unanimous support of our membership.

We have made this statement public not only to raise our voice and cast a vote for peace, but to encourage other synagogue communities that feel at a loss to consider what they can say together. We do not want to look back and feel like we were silent. I suspect you feel the same.

You can read the full statement at nershalom.org/ceasefire.

May the ripples of pain and suffering soon cease.

Putin Sets ‘No Limits’ in Ukraine Land Grab

Vladimir Putin is setting “no limits” on how much territory he seeks to snatch in his war on Ukraine, defense analysts have warned.

According to a new report from a leading U.S. thinktank, the Russian president and his Kremlin staff have “intentionally set no limits to their objectives of conquest in Ukraine and have suggested repeatedly that areas outside of Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk, and Luhansk oblasts are part of Russia.”

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) added that Russia sees a strategic need to maintain military operations on multiple fronts to prevent Ukraine from successfully conducting a counter-offensive.

Nicole Wolkov, Russia Researcher for the ISW, told Newsweek that Russia’s plans to “protract” the war will incentivize Putin to set new territorial objectives.

“Russia is making creeping gains to advance in Ukraine to protract the war, prevent Ukraine from conducting significant counter-offensive operations, and outlast Western security support for Ukraine,” the ISW said.

Wolkov added: “Putin likely assesses that that he can leverage Russia’s ability to maintain the initiative during that time to seize more territory. A protracted war would also provide Russia with time to continue to expand its defense industrial base and generate manpower.”

The ISW warned that a protracted war will “incentivize” Putin to explicitly set new territorial objectives as long as he believes Ukrainian forces cannot hold back his advances nor conduct meaningful counter-offensives to regain lost territory.

“Russian officials have routinely denied the existence of Ukrainian statehood and culture and have indicated their interest in territories on lands beyond these four oblasts”, the ISW said.

The ISW also stressed the importance of delivering military aid swiftly to help turn the tide of the war in Ukraine’s favor.

“If weapons are delivered in a timely fashion and consistently, this could help Ukraine conduct offensive operations,” Wolokov said amid the ongoing conflict.

It comes after documents obtained by the Washington Post suggest Russia accidentally dropped glide bombs on its territory nearly at least 38 times.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia fired hundreds of glide bombs at his country in the last week.

Writing on X, he said: “This week alone, Russia has used more than 800 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine. Against our cities and communities, against our people, against everything that makes life normal”

Glide bombs are Soviet-era munitions that have been modified to include wings and navigation systems that allow for a gliding flight path to a target. The bombs can have a payload of 1.5 tonnes.

The gliding additions allow bombs to travel much further as the heavy weaponry is fitted with precision guidance systems and launched from an aircraft flying out of range of air defenses.

Ukraine dismissed allegations from Belarus that it was amassing troops to reinforce their shared border. The Belarusian Defence Ministry claimed on Sunday that Ukraine was moving troops and weapons to the border.

Border guard spokesman Andriy Demchenko told Ukrainian TV: “It is not the first time Belarus offers information about Ukraine presenting a threat and strengthening itself. This is another part of the information operation conducted by Belarus with support by Russia.

Amazingly resilient, humorous and optimistic. Dear fellow Brits, I am talking about you | Gillian Harvey

After 15 years abroad, I was anxious about moving my family back to the UK. There are problems here, but also so many admirable people

Fifteen years ago I moved to France with my husband and a burgeoning baby bump, lured by low property prices and the chance to quit our jobs as teachers. That was in 2009, when Facebook was still a novelty, twittering was just for birds and I wasn’t sure if we’d need wifi at our new home. Gordon Brown was still prime minister, in case you need another measure of how long ago it was.

As we approach a general election and the potential return of a Labour government, I have recently moved back to the UK. The decision was made, at first, with some trepidation. After years of cuts, austerity and Covid, I’d begun to worry the place I’d be returning to might feel as alien as France did when I’d first arrived, with its unfathomable bureaucracy, shops that closed on Mondays and habitual lunchtime (and sometimes morning) drinking.

Gillian Harvey is a freelance writer and mother of five. She is the author of One French Summer
