I booked an all-inclusive trip to the Amazon rainforest, and I can’t believe how much I got for $90 a day

  • I spent about three days at an all-inclusive lodge in the Amazon rainforest for $270.
  • I had to take a two-hour bus and a two-hour canoe ride to get to my overwater lodge.
  • I spent my time spotting animals, hiking, swimming, and taking in the peaceful setting.

As a child, I dreamed of visiting the Amazon rainforest, but I always envisioned it being wildly inaccessible.

Traveling, especially internationally, is expensive. Looking at lodging alone, hotel prices shot up by 1.7% between April and May, according to NerdWallet’s Travel Price Index.

So when I found a three-day, all-inclusive tour of the Amazon rainforest at Green Forest Ecolodge for just $270, I knew I had to go.

The package included all my meals, bus and canoe transfers, a private lodge, and up to four activities a day.

Here’s what it was like.

It was a bit of a hike to get there

After landing in Ecuador, I hopped on an overnight shuttle from Quito to Lago Agrio. Still slightly sleepy, I splurged and spent a few dollars on a taxi from the bus station to Magic Hostal, the designated meeting spot.

From there, a driver met me for a complimentary transfer to the canoe launch. The drive took about two hours, winding through suburbs and navigating a mixture of tarmac and grit roads.

After jumping off the minibus, the real adventure started. I was ushered toward the river, where a guide placed my luggage in a thick plastic bag on a canoe to keep it dry.

He then helped me board the precariously wobbling vessel and gave me a green poncho (it’s not called the rainforest for nothing).

With that, we were on our way to the lodge

A driver steered the vessel while a tour guide kept a sharp eye out for wildlife. They seemed to understand that time was of the essence in my short three-day stay.

Eibhlis Gale-Coleman

The most exciting sighting was squirrel monkeys — sociable little primates that leaped along overwater branches. But by the time the two-hour canoe ride was over, I’d already seen multiple monkey species, birds, and a sloth.

It started raining as the canoe navigated the last few bends of the Cuyabeno River. I was dry under my fancy green poncho, but not wearing waterproof mascara was definitely a poor choice.

The overwater lodges were connected by a green boardwalk

I was ecstatic as we approached the wooden dock and I got my first glimpse of the lodge I’d be staying in.

I opted for a private overwater bungalow with a terrace and hammock. The double bed inside came equipped with a mosquito net, and the bathroom was semi-open and overlooked the jungle.

It was truly beautiful.

Meals were a sociable and elaborate occasion with the other guests

Lunch was served right away. Everyone staying here ate together three times a day in the main lodge, and a bell rang to announce each meal.

Meals consisted of three courses of traditional Ecuadorian cuisine.

There was a starter, main, and dessert at lunch and dinner, and breakfast was a mixture of fruit, toast, and a hot meal. Unlimited hot drinks and bottled water were also available 24/7.

I’m vegetarian, and I was a little worried about the food and drink situation, but I didn’t have any issues during my stay. The staff were very conscious of food quality and water safety, so I wasn’t worried about getting sick.

I experienced so many excursions as part of my all-inclusive package

On the first day alone, I saw caimans (alligatorid species) and took a guided night hike.

I spotted all kinds of nocturnal creatures like tarantulas.

The second day was busier, starting with a hike through the thick jungle.

While treading through the wet soil — that’s almost orange from the high levels of clay — I saw a snake and owl monkeys before crossing some swamp terrain.

Along the way, our guide, Elvis, taught us about the rainforest. I learned poisonous snakes in the Amazon have a triangular head and that indigenous Cuyabeno communities believe copal resin wards off negativity.

I’d been nervous about swimming in the Amazon, but it was surprisingly warm

Later on the second day, I’d scheduled a sunset lagoon swim.

On the way, we saw pink dolphins and woolly monkeys and heard roaring howler monkeys.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I was a little nervous about swimming (it wasn’t exactly balmy). But after diving into the lagoon from the canoe, everything was peaceful.

It was a refreshing bit of solitude as Elvis played music from a speaker.

On the boat ride back, we spotted adult caimans that looked straight out of “Jurassic Park.” Their unnerving yellow eyes were shuddering but impressive.

The third day was short and sweet but still amazing

My final morning started with a quick birdwatching excursion. I spotted toucans, macaws, and a nesting red heron.

But after breakfast, it was time to head back out on the canoe to transfer to Lago Agrio.

I couldn’t believe the value I got for my money

eiblish posing in the amazon rainforestI highly recommend this all-inclusive trip.

Eibhlis Gale-Coleman

Visiting the Amazon rainforest was the opposite of what I expected. It was budget-friendly and serene, not expensive and uncomfortable.

After my stay, I realized $270 for three days of food, lodging, and activities was a ridiculously good deal — especially since I got to see caimans, pink river dolphins, five species of monkeys, and hundreds of insects and birds.

I’d definitely recommend the experience, even for the squeamish or those who don’t think they’re outdoorsy.

The S&P 500 will hit 8,000 by the end of the decade as the bull market continues through the ‘roaring 20s,’ market vet says

  • The “Roaring 20s” are back and set take the S&P 500 to new heights, market vet Ed Yardeni says.
  • The Yardeni Research president predicted the benchmark index could hit 8,000 by the end of this decade.
  • The upwards momentum will be driven by AI and improving corporate earnings, he said.

The bull market in stocks is bound to run on until the end of this decade, according to market veteran Ed Yardeni.

Speaking on the David Lin Report this week, the Yardeni Research president reiterated his bullish forecast on stocks. The S&P 500 is on track to hit 6,000 by the end of 2025, and could rally to 8,000 by the end of the decade, he predicted, implying another 46% upside for the benchmark index.

A confluence of bullish factors will get it there, Yardeni said, noting that, in his view, the “Roaring ’20s” are back.

“I’m still bullish. I think it’s a bull market … These are all my base case, 60% most likely, Roaring 2020 scenario,” he said of his price targets.

Stocks look to be on a good trajectory given the strength of the US economy, Yardeni said. Despite fears that the US would slip into a recession, the economy has continued to expand, with GDP expected to grow another 3% this quarter, according to Atlanta Fed economists.

A strong economic backdrop is also fueling confidence in corporate earnings. 12-month forward earnings expectations on Wall Street are currently at an all-time high, reflecting the bullish mood among forecasters.

Then there is the ever-growing investor excitement about the potential of artificial intelligence, which has carried mega-cap tech stocks steadily higher over the last 18 months.

“There’s been a tremendous amount of excitement about artificial intelligence, and the reality is technology companies have reported some pretty fantastic earnings,” Yardeni said, pointing to stellar profits at companies like Nvidia and Oracle. “The news just continues to be very exciting about the technology revolution, that’s driving, what I think, is the Roaring 2020s,” he added.

Stocks still face some risks in the year ahead. The market has a 20% chance of seeing a “melt-up” and an ensuing “meltdown” if stocks rise unsustainably, Yardeni said, echoing other forecasters who have warned of a potential market correction after a long run of stellar performance.

Republicans urge Trump to avoid 2020 debate pitfalls: ‘Don’t take the bait’

Senate Republicans are urging former President Trump to avoid a repeat of his much-maligned debate performance against President Biden four years ago when the two meet onstage Thursday for a pivotal moment in their rematch.

Trump’s 2020 debate performance is remembered for interruptions, badgering and running roughshod over Biden and debate moderator Chris Wallace — as well as his infamous response that the Proud Boys should “stand back and stand by.”

Now, Republicans are urging him to tone it down in the name of presidential success.

“Don’t take the bait,” said Sen. John Thune (S.D.), the No. 2 Senate Republican who is running to become leader next year. “Demeanor’s important, tone’s important. I think you can be decisive and strong, as he is, but I think in many ways you want to give President Biden as much rope as possible because I don’t think that probably is going to play well for him.”

“This is why you play them, right? The debates are going to be important as they always are,” he continued. “If [Trump] comes in there and just shows strength and leadership but maintains a calm demeanor and lets Biden go, it goes well for him.”

This week’s debate, which is scheduled ahead of both national conventions for the first time since the advent of televised debates in 1960, is set to become one of the first major moments of the general election battle.

It could be a turning point in the race, in which Biden has struggled to put Trump away in battleground state polls.

But as failed candidates of the past can attest, a campaign can change with one bad night — just as Trump’s did four years ago. Republicans are hopeful the shoe will be on the other foot this go-around.

“The main focus is going to be: is Biden capable?” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a top Trump ally in the upper chamber.

“If I were President Trump, I would talk about right track, wrong track,” he continued. “I don’t think he needs to be overly-aggressive. Just make the case that if you think we’re on the wrong track, you’re right.”

Trump immediately agreed to Thursday’s debate at CNN studios in Atlanta after saying for months he wanted as many debates as possible against Biden. His campaign has spent weeks lowering expectations around Biden’s performance, portraying the president as weak, ailing and mentally incompetent.

But Trump’s team is also preparing for the possibility that Biden exceeds expectations, laying the foundation to dismiss the performance as a charade — just as it did after Biden’s State of the Union address in early March.

Biden’s team also jumped at the chance to debate next week as they hope to raise the stakes of this election and put the race on the map for some voters who still haven’t turned their attention to the political season.

“I think they’re going to be looking for other cues in terms of: is President Biden answer capable of answering all the questions relevantly, and is President Trump within the rails?” Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) said. “Who knows? That’s why I think [the debate] presents all sorts of questions.”

Biden departed for Camp David on Thursday to take part in days of extensive debate prep — a process Trump has eschewed since he launched his 2016 presidential campaign.

The importance of Thursday, however, is not lost among Trump supporters who are well aware of what happened four years ago. Not only was Trump uber-aggressive and barely allowed Biden to get a word in edgewise, but he was also visibly sweating, a fact that was compounded days later when he tested positive for COVID-19.

Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), who is reportedly on Trump’s shortlist to become his running mate, acknowledged the stakes but maintained confidence that the former president will see a favorable outcome.

“I think it’s going to be a good night, but it’s a very important night,” Vance said. “He just has to make his case to the American people. There’s a very clear contrast between how things were under him and how things were under Biden. He just, I think, has to hit that theme and that’s what we’ll do.”

Other Trump supporters are bullish that he will flip the script from 2020.

“Trump’s going to kick his a‑‑,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said. “You can quote me on that.”
