It’s eerie, it’s excruciating … Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer, please stop talking about football | Joel Golby

They may well like the game, but as an England fan, I don’t want my big Euros summer sullied by performative politics

Field report from east London, weekend of 9 and 10 June 2024: Rishi Sunak has destroyed the Adidas Samba. Possibly for ever, possibly irreparably. You will of course recall that the Samba was the unanimous “shoe of the summer” for two years running until its appearance on the prime minister’s Instagram page at the start of April, at which point it became shoesona non grata among London’s cool, interesting-sunglasses-wearing elite. Since then, I and most people with east London postcodes have had a tricky relationship with the Samba. I hold my own personal pair up every time I get dressed (you can’t argue with that silhouette! The colourway goes with everything!), imagine Sunak wearing them with a shirt, black socks and chinos (insane!), then promptly put them down again. I bravely wore a pair to the local park, London Fields, over the weekend in an attempt to “reclaim” them, but they went down with a clunk and I’m not sure I can show my face there again.

Why is this relevant? Well, I think it illustrates quite neatly what a dark kiss of death politicians can put on something cool by expressing even a mild interest in it or appreciation of it (arguably Rishi killing the Samba is the most tangible change he has enacted as PM). I think often and fondly about the time Tom Watson quit Labour’s shadow cabinet on a massive Glastonbury comedown, and signed off his resignation letter with a plea to Ed Miliband: “If you want to see an awesome band, I recommend Drenge.” Why would you say that? Don’t say that. I want my politicians to wear black suits that don’t fit very well, know what Hansard is and nothing else, and once every five years one of the particularly ghoulish-looking ones who sits at the back gets in a funny sex scandal. Stop wearing trainers! Stop listening to Drenge! Do your job!

Russia Indicts US Journalist Gershkovich on Trumped-Up Espionage Charges

Russia on Thursday indicted American reporter Evan Gershkovich on charges of espionage after more than a year of imprisonment in Moscow.

Gershkovich was detained in March last year while on assignment in Yekaterinburg for the Wall Street Journal. Russian prosecutors on Thursday alleged without evidence that Gershkovich was gathering intelligence for the CIA about a Russian tank manufacturer.

Gershkovich, the office of Russia’s General Prosecutor said, “on the instructions of the CIA, collected secret information in the Sverdlovsk region in March 2023 about the activities of the defense plant NPK Uralvagonzavod JSC on the production and repair of military equipment.”

The journalist is the latest American to face charges in Russia, which has been accused of falsely imprisoning Americans to gain leverage in disputes with the United States. Gershkovich could face up to 20 years in prison on the espionage charges.

No evidence has been presented to support the accusations against Gershkovich. He is the first American journalist arrested in Russia on espionage charges since the Cold War, Reuters reported.

While the State Department has made efforts to secure Gershkovich’s release, Russia and the United States have reportedly failed to reach a consensus on a deal that would free the journalist.

“The U.S. side is continuing to disregard our proposals,” Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said in May. “It’s a highly delicate topic. In the past, we managed to come to a resolution on some of the high-profile cases but then came the long standstill that we’re in now.”

The Biden administration in December 2022 struck a deal to free WNBA player Britney Griner, imprisoned in Russia on drug charges. In exchange, the United States released Viktor Bout, a convicted Russian arms dealer nicknamed the “Merchant of Death.”

Former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan is also imprisoned in Russia on a 16-year sentence for charges of espionage. Alsu Kurmasheva, a U.S. citizen and Radio Free Europe journalist, is also being held for her role in editing a book that criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russian president Vladimir Putin, when asked about Gershkovich this month, suggested that the United States and Russia were discussing a new exchange.

“I know the United States administration is indeed taking vigorous steps to free him,” Putin said. “But such issues are not resolved through the media. They like a quiet, calm, professional approach and dialogue between intelligence agencies. And, of course, they should be resolved only on the basis of reciprocity.”

WATCH: Italian PM Corrals Biden After He Wanders Off at Summit

President Joe Biden wandered away from a group of foreign leaders at the G7 summit in Italy on Thursday, only to be corralled back to the group by Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni.

Video of the incident shows foreign leaders visibly confused as Biden turns and walks away from them during a demonstration of Italian Army parachuters. After Meloni led Biden back to the group to pose for a photo, Biden slowly donned a pair of sunglasses.

The G7 summit is taking place in Italy just days after massive shifts in the European Union Parliament. The agenda will focus on global conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war.

The awkward incident comes after the Wall Street Journal published a story this month detailing lawmakers’ concerns about Biden’s age and mental acuity. The incumbent president’s age has been a major talking point in this year’s presidential election, with voters expressing doubts about Biden’s ability to competently finish another term.

In a recent Time magazine interview, Biden was asked, “Large majorities of Americans, including in the Democratic Party, tell pollsters they think you are too old to lead. Could you really do this job as an 85-year-old man?”

“I can do it better than anybody you know. You’re looking at me, I can take you too,” Biden replied.

While Biden is bullish on his acuity and ability to serve another term, many Americans disagree. According to an ABC News/Ipsos poll in February, 86 percent of Americans think the president is too old to serve another term.

The summit will end on Saturday, the same day the Ukraine Peace Summit begins in Switzerland—an event Biden will skip to attend a Hollywood fundraiser hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

AOC Decried Growing Anti-Semitism on the Left. Days Earlier, She Requested $1.5 Million Earmark for Legal Group Accused of Hostility to Jews

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) denounced the rise of anti-Semitism in the progressive movement at an event with liberal Jewish leaders on Monday. Weeks earlier, the “Squad” member requested $1.5 million in taxpayer funds for a New York City law group accused of hostility towards Jews and Israel.

Ocasio-Cortez requested an earmark on May 17 for Bronx Defenders to “improve justice in the criminal system” for low-income residents of the borough. Ocasio-Cortez, who has called to defund police, said the grant will help low-income defendants “mount a robust defense,” against what she laments as the “vast” resources of police departments.

Bronx Defenders has been embroiled in several high-profile incidents of anti-Semitism. The organization was ordered to pay a former Jewish employee $170,000 last year after colleagues harassed her with anti-Semitic taunts over her support for Israel. In September, Bronx Defenders employees at a court-ordered training session on anti-Semitism broke out in a chant of “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” a call for the eradication of the Jewish state.

Ocasio-Cortez’s request highlights the tightrope she has tried to walk as a leader of a progressive movement that has become increasingly hostile to Israel—and as an emerging ally of President Joe Biden, whom anti-Israel activists often refer to as “Genocide Joe.”

The Bronx Defenders’ anti-Israel hostility has only grown in the wake of Hamas’s October 7 terrorist attack. According to the New York Times, roughly 150 Bronx Defenders union members approved a statement that condemned Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza, but failed to condemn Hamas’s attack, in which 1,200 Israelis were murdered. The union said it “supports Palestinian liberation and resistance under occupation,” and pushed the debunked claim that Israel bombed the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. Bronx Defenders executives have tried to distance the group from the union’s statement, but that hasn’t thwarted calls to defund the organization.

Ocasio-Cortez decried anti-Semitism on the left during a virtual event with the head of Jewish Council for Public Affairs, a liberal Jewish group. While Ocasio-Cortez said anti-Semitism “undermine[s]” the progressive cause, she asserted that “bad faith political actors” are “weaponizing anti-Semitism” to divide the progressive movement.

Ocasio-Cortez’s condemnation could ring hollow given her history of voting against measures to support Israel or condemn anti-Semitic acts.

The Democrat, who accused Israel of genocide in a House floor speech in March, has suggested that “marginalized Palestinians” have “no choice but to riot” against Israel. She was 1 of 10 House members to vote against a resolution in October to condemn Hamas’s attack and reiterate “commitment to Israel’s security.” In 2021, Ocasio-Cortez apologized and publicly sobbed after she voted “present” to fund Israel’s Iron Dome, a defense system which has thwarted hundreds of Hamas rockets and Iranian drones in the latest war.

In April, Ocasio voted against a resolution to condemn “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”—the same chant that broke out at the Bronx Defenders meeting last year—as anti-Semitic.

Ocasio-Cortez’s office and the Bronx Defenders did not respond to requests for comment.
