There is explosive new reporting that Donald Trump allegedly used the N-word while on the set of the Apprentice. This isn’t surprising. And it’s not the first time that Trump has been accused of using that word. But this could still end up being an impactful story.

Trump’s base may love how racist he is. But his base has never been relevant to the outcome of elections. Elections are decided by people outside your own base. And there are conservatives who are hesitantly considering voting Trump simply because he’s the Republican nominee, who will think twice after hearing that he likes running around using the N-word. Just as there are Republicans outside Trump’s base who say they won’t vote for him if he becomes a convicted felon.

. . .

More to the point, this story about Trump using the N-word will likely prompt others to come forward and reveal similar incidents. These kinds of things have a tendency to snowball. But e even people on TV and Twitter try to tell us that this scandal won’t matter because Trump’s base doesn’t care, it’ll be important to keep in mind that Trump’s base doesn’t matter. Trump has shown tremendous weakness with Republican primary voters. These kinds of scandals can make that weakness even more of a problem for him.

Coordinated effort leads to arrest of Chinese national for cyberattacks

Washington — A 35-year-old Chinese national is facing charges related to committing cybercrimes that FBI Director Christopher Wray described as “likely the world’s largest botnet ever.”

The arrest in Singapore was the result of an international coordinated effort that included law enforcement agencies from Germany, Singapore, the United States and Thailand.

YunHe Wang, arrested on May 24, is accused of being the creator of the 911 S5 botnet, a residential proxy service.

Wang, along with other unnamed parties, created the 911 S5 botnet to facilitate “cyber-attacks, large-scale fraud, child exploitation, harassment, bomb threats, and export violations,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland in a Department of Justice press release on Wednesday.

Wang sold access to infected IP addresses to cybercriminals in exchange for crypto or fiat currency. From these transactions, he received at least $99 million in profits, the DOJ stated.

The cybercriminals Wang transacted with were allegedly able to use the infected IP addresses to “bypass financial fraud detection systems and steal billions of dollars from financial institutions, credit card issuers, and federal lending programs,” according to the DOJ release.

The compromised IP addresses allowed Wang’s customers to create fraudulent unemployment claims that targeted pandemic relief programs. The United States estimates they lost $5.9 billion from these fraudulent claims.

Wang used his profits to buy property in China, St. Kitts and Nevis, the United States, Singapore, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. Wang also spent his money on luxury cars and watches.

Wang faces several charges including substantive computer fraud, conspiracy to commit computer fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Wang could face up to 65 years in prison if convicted.

Some information for this report was provided by Reuters and Agence France-Presse.

Man charged with hate crimes after driving car at Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn

20221106_untitled_01245-1024x569.jpg

(JTA) A man was arrested on hate crimes charges after aiming his car at Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn on Wednesday.

The incident in Canarsie came as antisemitism has spiked in New York City, and drew condemnation from Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Video posted by the Flatbush Shomrim, a Jewish neighborhood watch group, showed the white sedan jumping a curb and driving onto a dirt yard toward several Orthodox Jewish men, who scrambled out of the way. A second clip in the video showed the vehicle screeching to a halt next to several Jewish men on a sidewalk.

Flatbush Shomrim said in an accompanying social media post that the man had shouted antisemitic slurs during the attack.

An NYPD spokesperson told the New York Jewish Week that the suspect’s name is Asghar Ali and he was charged with more than 10 crimes, including attempted murder as a hate crime.

Hochul said the New York State police were coordinating with the NYPD to investigate the incident.

“Hate crimes have no place in New York and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” she said in a post on X.

Adams said the suspect appeared “to have been emotionally disturbed” and was quickly arrested, and that the incident was being investigated as a possible hate crime.

“There’s no room for hate in the city, and the police department is going to respond accordingly,” the mayor said in a Wednesday interview with the 92.3 FM radio station.

The UJA-Federation of New York thanked the NYPD and district attorney’s office for their handling of the incident.

“All steps must be taken to preserve the safety and well-being of our community,” the federation said on X.

There have been at least 285 antisemitic incidents reported to police since the start of October, far higher than the 153 incidents during the same period last year, according to preliminary police data. Jewish security groups say many attacks likely go unreported.

Both before Oct. 7 and since, Jews have consistently been targeted in more hate crimes than any other group in New York City. Between the start of October and the end of March, Jews were the victims of 62% of all hate crimes, according to NYPD data.

Recent years have seen waves of street harassment and attacks against Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn. According to the ADL’s audit of antisemitic incidents last year, “visibly Orthodox” Jews were targeted in 31 out of the 51 antisemitic assaults the group recorded in New York City.

In a separate case, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Tuesday announced a hate crimes indictment against Skiboky Stora, 40, for attacks on Jews and others.

In November, according to the indictment, a Jewish couple was walking its dogs in Union Square in downtown Manhattan when they witnessed Stora tearing down posters of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. The couple took a photo of Stora, who then followed them while shouting antisemitic remarks, including “Die, Jews, Die!”

In addition, since October, Bragg’s office said, Stora has harassed or assaulted several non-Jewish people while making discriminatory remarks. Stora was charged with assault in the third degree as a hate crime, stalking in the third degree as a hate crime and aggravated harassment, Bragg’s office said in a statement.

Can the port of Chabahar help Armenia overcome its lack of access to the sea? Opinion

Port of Chabahar – Armenia’s gateway to the sea

“If Armenia joins the development of Iran’s Chabahar Port, I believe the country can overcome its lack of access to the sea,” says Indian Ambassador to Armenia Nilakshi Saha Sinha.

The Chabahar Port is being developed jointly by India and Iran. It is a key component of the North-South Transport Corridor project. Experts believe that Armenia’s participation is important for both Delhi and Tehran.

“This is a very important project, and everything must be done to bring it to life. Efforts should be made to ensure that one of its branches definitely passes through Armenia. This program is significant not only economically but also geopolitically. I am convinced that Azerbaijan is doing everything to prevent its realization,” stated Iranologist Gohar Iskandaryan.

“We await proposals from the Armenian side”

Indian Ambassador to Armenia Nilakshi Saha Sinha informed journalists that the Armenian authorities are showing interest in utilizing the Chabahar Port. She recalled that in 2023, the port was visited by Gnel Sanosyan, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure.

“We are awaiting details from the Armenian side and will certainly consider them when we receive clear proposals from Armenia,” she said.

In October 2023, during the World Maritime Summit held in Mumbai, India, Minister Gnel Sanosyan stated that Armenia is interested in cooperating within the framework of the North-South Transport Corridor and the development of the Chabahar Port. He also mentioned Armenia’s intention to join the Persian Gulf-Black Sea transport corridor project: “We are confident that Armenia’s road network has significant potential to achieve this goal. The Armenian government is making efforts to restore and modernize the country’s relevant infrastructure.”

Ambassador Nilakshi Saha Sinha believes that Armenia, lacking access to the sea, needs to participate in multiple communication projects.

Commentary

The possibility of transit shipments through the Chabahar Port is not a new idea, says Iranologist Gohar Iskandaryan. The importance of this project was reignited by Iran and India in 2020, following the second Karabakh war.

A year later, the Indian foreign minister visited Armenia, marking the first visit in 30 years, Iskandaryan highlights. During his visit to Yerevan, Indian foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar discussed the North-South Transport Corridor project.

“For India, it is crucial to establish connections with both Europe and Central Asia. Pakistan blocks India’s direct routes, so they need alternatives to reach Central Asia, either through Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea or via the Chabahar Port in Iran, Armenia, and then through Georgia to Europe,” she explained.

The expert emphasizes the critical factor of road safety:

“After the Karabakh war, Azerbaijan actively attempted to seize certain parts of Syunik [a southern region of Armenia], claiming them as its own and creating obstacles for Iranian trucks traveling through these areas. This prompted Armenian authorities to develop alternative routes and demonstrate to Iran and India that we can provide safe roads.”

According to Iskandaryan, Armenia was supposed to complete its segment of the North-South Transport Corridor by 2018-19:

“Despite significant expenditures, less than half of the work has been completed. The authorities have tried to address this shortfall by securing funding, building alternative roads, expanding the existing Sisian road in Syunik, and undertaking necessary repair work.“

Chabahar Port is a focal point for Yerevan, believes Iskandaryan. She argues that Armenia’s involvement in the North-South Corridor is also crucial for Iran, which “is closely scrutinizing the South Caucasus, especially after the 44-day war in Karabakh.”

She points out that 90 percent of Iranian goods reach Europe through Turkey, necessitating alternative routes for Tehran:

“If the road passes through Azerbaijan, any issues with Turkey could also affect Iran’s access through Azerbaijan. A route through Armenia is therefore very important for Iran and is a key interest for them. This is why Iranian officials have stated that the Armenia-Iran border is a red line for them.”
