Trump Media has gotten Congress involved in its crusade against short sellers

  • Trump Media CEO Devin Nunes wrote a letter to lawmakers asking them to look into “unlawful manipulation” of the firm’s stock.
  • Nunes said there’s a strong motivation for “naked” short-selling.
  • Citadel Securities last week called Nunes a “loser” for blaming shorts for the stock’s decline.

The CEO of Trump Media filed a letter on Tuesday urging House Republican committee heads to look into the possibility of illegal manipulation of the company’s stock, which has plunged since it went public at the end of March.

Devin Nunes said in the letter that the firm has identified a “strong indication” of shady trading, and the committee should swiftly investigate its scope, including “whether any laws, including RICO statutes and tax evasion laws, were violated.”

The letter said the Truth Social parent company, which is majority-owned by former President Donald Trump, has fallen prey to “naked” short selling, an illicit practice that involves selling shares before knowing if any are available to borrow in order to short them.

The CEO pointed out the cost of shorting shares of Trump Media was the highest in US markets by a long shot as of April 3, which means that brokers have “a significant financial incentive to lend non-existent shares.”

Trump Media stock has been on a roller coaster ride since its IPO at the end of last month, hitting $35.05 a share Wednesday, up almost 8% after a 54% drop from its peak.

In the letter, Nunes called out four big market makers — Citadel Securities, VIRTU Americas, G1 Execution Services, and Jane Street Capital — that have gobbled up over 60% of the trading volume in DJT shares.

Nunes also penned a separate letter to Nasdaq last week bemoaning the impact of short-sellers on the stock.

Citadel Securities fired back, calling Nunes as a “proverbial loser” for blaming short-sellers for the flagging stock price.

Trump and other executives saw a windfall on Tuesday, and were rewarded with millions of extra shares after the stock traded above $17.50 for 20 days in a row. It was part of a deal with the SPAC that took the company public and included 36 million shares for Donald Trump, an amount worth about $1.3 billion.

I shopped at Trader Joe’s daily until Aldi won me over. I finally understand why people love the chain so much.

  • I used to shop at Trader Joe’s daily because it was close to work.
  • However, after changing jobs, I began shopping at Aldi to save some money.
  • I’ve grown to love Aldi’s wide aisles, low prices, and great products.

Before I shopped at Trader Joe’s, I was never loyal to any one grocery store. Like many shoppers, my store choice was driven primarily by convenience: whichever grocer was closest to me became my go-to.

That’s why when I worked near Trader Joe’s, I stopped there daily. Although I found the aisles crowded and the produce inconsistent, I liked the store’s seasonal items and preferred the interactions with employees over the self-checkouts of bigger stores.

However, when a new job came with a decreased income, I decided that I could no longer spend money on food of inconsistent quality.

When I realized there were two Aldi locations on my way home from work, I started shopping at the popular budget retailer and never looked back.

I’d been to Aldi in the past, and my partner raved about it

My partner had been an Aldi superfan for years and often supplemented my Trader Joe’s stops with groceries from his weekly hauls.

I had only been to Aldi a few times and was always surprised by the selection of foods he brought home — non-GMO and gluten-free foods, plus lots of crunchy snacks, chocolates, and bags of oranges for his ever-hungry teenage son who lives with us on the weekends.

I also began to notice how long the Aldi produce he bought lasted in our fridge. While Trader Joe’s fruit and bagged greens were sometimes overripe and wilted despite the sell-by dates, I found Aldi berries and spinach remained fresh for much longer.

Over the last two years, Aldi opened more locations than any other grocery store — so I figured there had to be something to that, and decided to venture back to the retailer.

I was sold on Aldi as soon as I visited

I didn’t know what to expect on my first trip back to Aldi, but the first thing I noticed was that I forgot a quarter for the shopping cart.

I ran back to my car in the blustery rain to find one and then fumbled to release the chained cart. Since I typically prioritize convenience over everything, this frazzled me. But after I freed a cart and stepped inside, I was relieved.

Unlike Trader Joe’s tight aisles, which were often jammed with shoppers reaching for items stacked above open freezers, Aldi had wide aisles and open cardboard boxes of fresh, colorful produce.

Aldi has a warehouse feel, but its no-frills presentation probably helps keep prices low.

During my trip, I found the pasta aisle lacked a great selection of gluten-free options, but I did find organic quinoa pasta. I also couldn’t resist a $7 jar of Rao’s marinara sauce, since I’ve seen it in other stores for as much as $10.

When I headed toward the produce, I found that the open boxes of fruits and vegetables were well-organized along the roomy aisle. It didn’t feel cramped like Trader Joe’s, which made browsing easier.

Just like the seasonal items that stoke Trader Joe’s fandom, Aldi’s Finds are ever-changing and quirky. A few weeks ago, I left with Space Dunk Oreos — filled with pink and blue cream and strange popping candy.

I’ve grown to love Aldi’s prices, relaxed atmosphere, and products

Locked shopping carts aside, switching to Aldi made me realize my loyalty to Trader Joe’s was just a habit.

Although I used to spend more money on higher-priced brands, I’ve been enjoying Aldi’s products for months. This makes me think the quality of their products is the same as — if not better than — the more expensive items at other stores.

Not only does Aldi have better prices and a more relaxed atmosphere than Trader Joe’s, but I’ve found Aldi’s produce stays fresh longer — a convenience that may turn me into a loyal shopper.

I hate cottage cheese but I tried stirring it into my meals for an extra dose of protein. I felt my gym performance improve.

Author holding a container of cottage cheese on left; scrambled eggs with cottage cheese and hot sauce on right. One of the viral TikTok recipes involved cottage cheese in scrambled eggs.

Julia Pugachevsky

  • I’ve hated cottage cheese ever since I was a little kid.
  • It’s a great source of protein, and TikTok is obsessed with using it in viral recipes.
  • I tried it in three high-protein recipes — two of them are now in my regular rotation.

When I was a kid, my parents had me try cottage cheese. After all, I was already the “mouse” of the family, nibbling on slices of Havarti and cheddar any chance I could get. Logically, I might as well try a healthier alternative to deep-fried mozzarella sticks.

Since then, cottage cheese has been one of my greatest food foes. For a long time, my hatred of it had no impact on my life: cottage cheese peaked in popularity in the 1970s, so I almost never encountered it save the rare brunch menu.

That all changed recently, as TikToks started incorporating cottage cheese into everything from cookie dough to dipping sauce. At 23-28 grams of protein per cup (and only about 200 calories), cottage cheese can help you build muscle and lose weight.

Unfortunately, I do care about getting more protein, now that I strength-train. So, reluctantly, I decided to try it in three recipes: scrambled eggs, pasta sauce, and chocolate mousse.

I made the TikTok-viral high-protein pasta sauce first

Some of the most popular recipes involve blending cottage cheese with your pasta sauce of choice. I started with a straightforward recipe involving marinara.

The preparation was easy enough: while my pasta boiled, I chopped up some garlic and threw it in with cottage cheese, jarred pasta sauce, and seasoning into a blender. Then I just combined everything and added a sprinkle (seven handfuls) of Parmesan.

I dreaded the first bite, eyeing visible granules of cottage cheese. But, the cottage cheese had no taste.

It was texturally the same as ricotta and offered as much protein, but was less caloric — I wouldn’t have known the difference. It just added a little extra creaminess, and I felt a little more satiated eating the pasta than if it were just plain red sauce.

Side by side images of cottage cheese pastaI added seitan pieces the first time; the next, I used Barilla protein pasta.

Julia Pugachevsky

I made this a few times since, adding extra protein via seitan and protein-enriched pasta because, as a burgeoning gym rat, obsessively counting macros is my life now.

Rating: A-. It takes a little extra prep work, but otherwise it’s an easy weeknight dinner with an extra dose of protein. I’ll definitely try this again with other sauces like pesto, just to change it up.

The eggs improved my gains in the gym

Eggs, cottage cheese, salt, and pepper in a bowlI whisked eggs, cottage cheese, salt, and pepper before adding everything to the skillet.

Julia Pugachevsky

In a conversation at the gym about (you guessed it) eating more protein, a few of my weightlifting classmates brought up cottage cheese eggs. I knew I had to try them.

Eggs are blander than tomato sauce, so the chances my taste buds would come in direct contact with cottage cheese were high. Ugh.

I found a scrambled eggs recipe that was impossible to mess up: I just had to whisk cottage cheese with eggs, salt, and pepper, then throw everything onto a skillet for a few minutes.

Pouring this vomit-like concoction into a pan took my distaste to a new level.

After I was done, the consistency felt like a velvety fusion between scrambled and a cheesy omelet.

It was so good that I texted my group chat immediately. One of my friends dubbed me a “cottage cheese convert.” And it’s true! I genuinely enjoyed every bite and felt full for hours.

Best of all, I noticed myself lifting heavier when I went to the gym later that day. I also didn’t feel ravaged with hunger after I finished.

I’ve since made these eggs a few times, adding drizzles of Sriracha and Japanese BBQ sauce to give them a cute little outfit. In the future, I’ll add some veggies or throw in a side of lox to zhush it up even more.

Rating: A+. It’s easy to make, easy to customize, has about 27 grams of protein (per three eggs and 1/3 cup cottage cheese) — and still no cottage cheese flavor.

People love this low-sugar, high-protein chocolate mousse — but it tasted like cement

Lastly, I wanted to try cottage cheese in a dessert. I opted for a high-protein mousse involving protein powder.

On left: cottage cheese, oats, tahini, cocoa powder, milk, and protein powder in a blender. On right: a chocolate-y mousse in the blender.

Julia Pugachevsky

In a blender, I added the cottage cheese, protein powder, cocoa powder, tahini, oats, and almond milk. I also melted some oat milk chocolate as a topper and sprinkled some pistachios to finish.

The mousse was fluffy but very thick, closer to the consistency of wet cement. It took me a good 15 minutes to wrangle it out of the blender and scoop it into little cups. I should’ve followed my gut and added more milk than the recipe called for.

Chocolate cottage cheese mousse in a cup.The finished mousse, nowhere near as aesthetic as the recipe photos. What did I do wrong??

Julia Pugachevsky

Taste-wise, it was just OK, mostly because the protein powder was prominent and I loathe the flavor of sugar substitutes like Stevia (if you’re going to pretend you’re sugar, at least be good at it!)

Eating this felt like a punishment, but I don’t want to slander poor cottage cheese: she did no wrong here. She is versatile. She is the backbone. She did everything she could to make this work.

A spoonful of cottage cheese chocolate mousse. The mousse up close.

Julia Pugachevsky

Rating: C-. It has potential, but uses up a lot of cottage cheese and protein powder for me to keep experimenting.

I doubt I’ll make this mousse again, but if I did, I would just use regular sugar and chocolate. Then again, maybe I don’t need to turn every meal into a protein gains party. When I’m incorporating an ingredient that revolts me in its naked form for the sake of being healthier, my reward can just be a normal dessert.
