Kate Middleton’s Uncle Shares Update After Princess of Wales’ Cancer Diagnosis Reveal

Kate Middleton’s maternal uncle, Gary Goldsmith, said the Princess of Wales handled the explanation of her cancer diagnosis “incredibly well” in an exclusive interview with Spanish show ¡De Viernes! released on March 29.

“I have been in touch with my sister Carol [Middleton] to make sure my niece is okay. I thought Kate handled it incredibly well, especially in such a difficult and tricky situation,” said Goldsmith, who spoke to reporters in English, but had his answers translated to Spanish for viewers. “I don’t know anybody else who’s had to deal with something like that, deal with their children and then have to offer explanations to the national and international media in such a public scenario.”

Speculation about Kate’s whereabouts created a media and online frenzy after an image posted on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ social media accounts of Kate and her three children was pulled by major photo agencies because it appeared to be digitally manipulated. In a statement shared via social media, Kate accepted responsibility for editing the photo, saying: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.”

Rumors were put to rest on March 22, after Kate announced in a video message that she had been diagnosed with cancer after she underwent a planned abdominal surgery in January. The Princess of Wales is now undergoing “preventative chemotherapy.”

“It’s hard to imagine that they haven’t been affected by so many comments and conspiracy theories,” said Goldsmith, talking about his niece and her family. “I have sent messages to Kate so she knows what I feel and the love I have for her.”

Goldsmith recently appeared on the U.K. reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother, where he was the first housemate to be evicted by a public vote on March 8.

Helpful Tips for Planning Your Solar Eclipse Trip

People Observe Annular Solar Eclipse From Mexico

There are few natural phenomena that can evoke the same emotion of a solar eclipse. Around the world, myths and legends have developed to explain the rare event, which happens when the shadow of the moon blocks the light from the sun, causing a period of temporary darkness in the middle of the day. In ancient China, eclipses were said to signal that the sun was being devoured by a dragon, while in South America, subjects of the Inca Empire believed it signaled the sun god’s anger at the world.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

On April 8, 2024, those in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico will have the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse for themselves. TIME spoke to veteran solar eclipse travelers for tips, so that anyone planning a solar eclipse trip can get the most out of the experience.

What to consider before you embark on a solar eclipse trip

Travel to the path of totality

Most places on the eclipse path will only be able to experience a partial solar eclipse, where the sun is not completely covered by the moon. Many people assume that might be enough, but to really experience what a solar eclipse feels like, you should travel to the path of totality, where the sun is 100% covered. “A partial eclipse is not an eclipse. It really does not come close. You need to be in the path of totality to really experience it,” Paul Bryans, a project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, tells TIME.

To check if a location is in the line of totality, you can use this map. Places within the line of totality are shaded in the darkest shade of red.

Weather conditions

Another thing to think about when considering where to travel for a solar eclipse is the weather conditions in different places along the line of totality. You might not get the full experience if it is cloudy outside. When there are clouds blocking the sun and the moon, the eclipse effects are much less dramatic.

One way to avoid this problem is to choose a place along the line of totality with a high chance of sunny weather. For the eclipse in 2024, many of the places with the highest expected chances of sunny weather are in Mexico. If you would rather stay in the U.S. for the duration of the eclipse, many places in Texas are also expected to have good weather conditions. As a general rule for the 2024 eclipse, the further south along the eclipse line you go, the better your chances of good weather. “When you get to the northern parts, you have a much higher possibility of being disappointed,” Brian McGee, founder of Astro Trails, a company that leads solar eclipse tours, tells TIME.

Book accommodations and tickets in advance

Every expert TIME spoke with warned about how quickly accommodations and travel tickets sell out in places where the eclipse will happen. You can expect Airbnbs and hotel prices to go up dramatically for dates close to or during the eclipse. Transportation may also take way longer than usual. Traffic jams caused by tourists flocking into cities to catch the solar eclipse might make your travel time significantly longer so you should plan accordingly. During the 2017 solar eclipse, major traffic jams were recorded in Wyoming and Kentucky. The streets did not return to normal until approximately nine hours after the eclipse ended.

Whatever you do, make sure to arrive at your destination several hours before the eclipse starts. “It’s going to be crazy on the day of the eclipse. So my advice to people is if they’re going to travel, either by car or by airplane, do it early. Don’t leave it until Monday, April 8,” John Gianforte, director of the observatory at the University of New Hampshire, tells TIME.

What to consider during your solar eclipse trip

Protect your eyes

During the build up towards the solar eclipse, many people like to observe the sun to watch as the moon slowly covers more and more of it. However, if you want to view this period of partial eclipse, it is critical to use proper eye protection. “The fact that there is an eclipse doesn’t make it any more dangerous to look at the sun, but it makes people want to look at the sun,” says Gianforte.

Regular sunglasses do not provide enough protection for observing the eclipse, but the American Astronomical Society has a list of eclipse eye protection suppliers that meet the international safety standards. If you already wear eyeglasses, make sure the solar filter is placed on the outside of your glasses. Similarly, if you are viewing the partial eclipse through a camera, you need to make sure there is a certified solar filter on top of your camera lens. These filters are designed to protect your camera and your eyes from the dangerous portions of the sun’s radiation. Whatever lens you view the eclipse through, “the closest thing to the Sun has to be the filter,” says Gianforte.

During totality, remove eye protection

A common misconception about solar eclipses is that you must keep your solar protection glasses on at all times. However, if you are in the path of totality and the sun is 100% covered by the moon, you can look directly at the eclipse without eye protection. The eclipse veterans TIME spoke with strongly recommended removing solar protection from both your eyes and camera equipment during the period of totality to truly take in the experience. “Once there’s totality then you should absolutely take your glasses off and look directly at the sun,” says Bryans. “If you don’t do that you’ll miss a lot of the most interesting parts of it.”

However, it is important to remember that for the 2024 eclipse, the period of totality will last for a maximum of four and a half minutes according to NASA. Make sure to check the exact timing of totality in the place where you are viewing the eclipse from, and immediately resume using solar filters right before the period of totality ends.

Observe your surroundings

One of the most fascinating things to observe during an eclipse is not just the eclipse itself, but also the way the environment around you changes. During the period of totality, you’ll be able to feel the temperature drop by about 10°F. Animals such as birds, cats, and dogs, may start to act differently as they grapple with the confusion of the sun suddenly disappearing in the middle of the day. You may even be able to see some brighter stars and planets when you look at the sky once the sun is covered up.

What to consider after your solar eclipse trip

Journal about your experience

After the eclipse, you may want to journal about your thoughts and feelings to help remember the experience and take in the beauty of what you just witnessed. Seeing an eclipse can sometimes cause people to feel overwhelmed with emotion, and journaling can be a good way to process those feelings. “It’s one of the most emotion-evoking natural events that you can see,” says Gianforte. “It’s like if you go to the Grand Canyon or Mount Everest… it’s just hard to explain it. Everyone should, at least once in their life, see a total solar eclipse.”

Wait until the next day to travel back, if possible

Just as you may anticipate traffic jams on the way there, you should also expect similar delays on the way back. It’s a good idea to hang around an extra day since it could help you avoid congestion on the roads.

Expert found a backdoor in XZ tools used many Linux distributions

Linux-ransomware-encoder1.jpg

Red Hat warns of a backdoor in XZ Utils data compression tools and libraries in Fedora development and experimental versions.

Red Hat urges users to immediately stop using systems running Fedora development and experimental versions because of a backdoor in the latest versions of the “xz” tools and libraries.

Red Hat Information Risk and Security and Red Hat Product Security determined that Fedora Linux 40 beta does use two versions of xz libraries – xz-libs-5.6.0-1.fc40.x86_64.rpm and xz-libs-5.6.0-2.fc40.x86_64.rpm that contains a malicious code that appears to be intended to allow unauthorized access. The experts added that Fedora 40 Linux does not appear to be affected, they encourage all Fedora 40 Linux beta users to revert to 5.4.x versions.

Microsoft engineer Andres Freund discovered the backdoor issue that was tracked as CVE-2024-3094 (CVSS score 10).

“PLEASE IMMEDIATELY STOP USAGE OF ANY FEDORA RAWHIDE INSTANCES for work or personal activity. Fedora Rawhide will be reverted to xz-5.4.x shortly, and once that is done, Fedora Rawhide instances can safely be redeployed. Note that Fedora Rawhide is the development distribution of Fedora Linux, and serves as the basis for future Fedora Linux builds (in this case, the yet-to-be-released Fedora Linux 41).” reads the advisory published by Red Hat warned. “At this time the Fedora Linux 40 builds have not been shown to be compromised.“

XZ is a popular data compression format implemented in almost all Linux distributions, including both community-driven and commercial variants.

The malicious discovered by the researchers is obscured and is present only in the download package. The Git distribution doesn’t include the malicious code due to the lack of the M4 macro necessary for triggering the build of the malicious code.

The malicious build interferes with the authentication in sshd through systemd. Under certain conditions, an attacker can compromise sshd authentication and gain unauthorized remote access to the entire system.

The Debian security team also published an advisory about the vulnerability and confirmed that Debian stable versions are not impacted.

“Andres Freund discovered that the upstream source tarballs for xz-utils, the XZ-format compression utilities, are compromised and inject malicious code, at build time, into the resulting liblzma5 library. Right now no Debian stable versions are known to be affected. Compromised packages were part of the Debian testing, unstable and experimental distributions, with versions ranging from 5.5.1alpha-0.1 (uploaded on 2024-02-01), up to and including 5.6.1-1.” reads th advisory. “The package has been reverted to use the upstream 5.4.5 code, which we have versioned 5.6.1+really5.4.5-1. Users running Debian testing and unstable are urged to update the xz-utils packages.”

CISA also published an advisory urging to downgrade to an uncompromised XZ version (i.e., 5.4.6 Stable) and to hunt for any malicious.

Riley Strain’s family orders second autopsy after presumed drowning

(NewsNation) — The death of Riley Strain, a University of Missouri student who went missing in Nashville, Tennessee, for nearly two weeks, appears to be accidental, police say, but his parents still have questions.

Strain’s parents have ordered a second autopsy despite the preliminary autopsy that determined his death to be “accidental.”

Police announced Friday that Strain had been found dead in the Cumberland River about 8 miles west of downtown and foul play was not suspected.

Police previously said Strain, 22, was last seen just before 10 p.m. on March 8 after drinking downtown. University of Missouri officials said in a statement that Strain was traveling to Nashville to attend a private event.

Despite authorities saying there was no foul play involved, some details of the preliminary report are raising questions among his family members. The complete autopsy and toxicology report could take weeks or even months to be released.

“One thing that threw the family for a loop was the coroner going on record stating about the lack of water in his lungs,” Strain’s family friend told NewsNation. “Usually water in the lungs means that they were alive when they went into the water.”

The police report also stated that Strain was only found with his watch and shirt, and was just half dressed from the waist down.

Forensic analyst Joseph Scott Morgan joined “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” on Thursday to weigh in, saying further investigation is needed.

“Anytime that we have someone that is unclad, particularly in the lower body, it’s rather provocative when you begin to think about and so we take a harder look at those kinds of cases because any number of things can at least be implied we have to follow that line of logic to its finality,” Morgan said.

As to why there was no water found in his lungs, forensic expert Dr. Michelle Dupre told NewsNation it doesn’t necessarily mean he didn’t drown.

Dupre explained that there are two ways to drown: wet drowning, when you ingest water, and dry drowning, when you have a laryngospasm. In dry drowning, the body reacts to water entering the system by automatically closing up the airways, which means neither water nor oxygen is getting into the lungs.

Strain’s family awaits the results of the final autopsy, hoping to get some answers about Riley’s final moments.

Where are conjoined twins and former reality TV stars Abby and Brittany Hensel now?

Abby and Brittany HenselAbby and Brittany Hensel on their TLC show.

TLC

  • Conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel rose to prominence after a 1996 appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
  • They later had a short-lived TLC reality show chronicling their lives as recent college graduates.
  • The Hensels left the spotlight behind, but news that Abby got married has renewed attention.

Abby and Brittany Hensel, Minnesota-born conjoined twins who share a single body with separate heads and necks, first rose to fame as children in the 1990s.

Now, the two are back in the spotlight after news broke that Abby got married.

Here’s what to know about the twins and their lives now.

Abby and Brittany Hensel became famous after appearing on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1996

The Hensel twins were five years old when they appeared as guests on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in April 1996. During the interview, the girls discussed their favorite Disney movie and explained how they work together to move their shared body.

The two also appeared on the cover of Life magazine the same month for a feature titled “One Body, Two Souls.”

According to an interview with Time Magazine, their parents, Mike and Patty Hensel, were initially told by doctors they were expecting just one child. It wasn’t until Abby and Brittany were born, via C-section, that they realized there were two babies — rare dicephalic parapagus twins, sharing a bloodstream and all of their organs below their waist.

After their story was publicized in Life magazine and on Winfrey’s show, the Hensel twins’ lives were chronicled in a series of follow-up TV specials, including “Joined for Life,” a 2002 documentary that aired on the Discovery channel, and “Joined at Birth” the following year.

“Joined for Life: Abby & Brittany Turn 16,” an update released in 2006, followed the twins as they worked on getting their driver’s licenses and attended high school.

They briefly starred in their own TLC reality show

After high school, the twins attended Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, according to the Huffington Post.

Following the success of their numerous TV specials, TLC ordered a series following the then 22-year-old twins after they’d finished college. “Abby and Brittany” premiered on the network in August 2012.

“Abby and Brittany” aired for an eight-episode season, ending in October 2012. It depicted their job searches, post-graduation travels in Europe, and part-time teaching. During the series, they also moved into their own house.

Abby reportedly got married in 2021

On Wednesday, Today.com broke the news that Abby, now 34, had gotten married to a man named Joshua Bowling in 2021.

According to the publication, Bowling is a nurse and veteran of the US Army. The sisters, who are both working as fifth-grade teachers, reportedly still live in Minnesota, where they were born and raised. Bowling’s Facebook page, which has since been made private but was previously viewed by Business Insider, shows pictures of their wedding and the family traveling.

A Facebook page that appears to belong to Bowling’s mother has also shared wedding photos and a video of her son with the Hensels and reference their marriage, tagging the twins’ Facebook page. Bowling’s mom has also shared photos of the family boating.

According to the New York Post, Abby became a stepmom through the marriage to Bowling’s daughter from a past relationship.

TikTok and Facebook accounts that appear to belong to the Hensel twins didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Abby’s reported marriage.

Abby and Brittany appeared to address speculation around the marriage on TikTok

News of the marriage gained attention online following the media coverage, which appeared to prompt the pair to respond with TikTok videos on Friday, according to outlets like People and The New York Post.

“The internet is extra LOUD today. We have always been around,” the first video’s caption read.

The video featured statues of conjoined twins alongside hashtags like “happy” and “marriage.”

A second video appeared to show several pictures of the pair and Bowling together, including at their wedding. The third video featured a photo of Abby, Brittany, and Bowling embracing.

“This is for all you haters out there. If you don’t like what I do but watch everything I’m doing, you’re still a fan,” a voiceover said.
