Qatar’s Defence Outlook: An Increasing Budget

Qatar has ramped up its defence spending in recent months.

Background

Qatari defence deals have ramped up in recent months and Qatar has recently renewed its contract for a U.S. airbase. Qatari defence deals have sought to purchase new jets and air defence systems. Qatar is one of the most resource-rich states in terms of LNGs (Liquified natural gases). These Qatari defence deals are being done in order to position themselves as one of the key players in the Middle East. With its small population restricting large-scale actions, Qatar tries to portray itself as a business centre and an icon of stability amongst rocky neighbours. Having to balance regional politics against renewed business interests from both the East and West will surely challenge this small state in the near future.

Key Judgement 1. It is highly likely that Qatar will pursue defence deals with multiple different partners in the next 12 months.

Key Judgement 2. It is highly likely that Qatar will seek to position itself as a key mediator in regional politics in the next 12 months.

Key Judgement 3. It is highly likely that Qatar will pursue LNG deals with multiple partners in the next 12 months.
